Hi

After using ear plugs for the first time today I now realise that I should have used them from the start!

For now I used some 3M disposable ones just for testing. Which reusable earplugs are you using?

Personaly I don't use any :o

But I see these a while back, so if you want super posh custom fitted: www.ultimateear.com
They seem costly but if you use them often and for long enough....

Try and work out how long a box of 3m last you and how much would the use of them for 2 years cost.

pound shop sells three or four pairs for £1

I used to use them, they are good for long journeys,i don't bother now though

I use them for long journeys especially on motorways.

Last November, one cold Saturday evening, I was coming back from the Peak District down the M1 and I had forgotten to put my ear plugs in. Not only was I frozen but the noise in my helmet was driving me mad. I stopped at the first services I came to and put some plugs in.

Even though i was still cold, the fact I had the ear plugs in made the rest of the journey bearable.

I use ultimate ear as mentioned above, fantastic apart from the hassle of finding somewhere to get the impressions done in the lakes then the long wait for them to be made.

I also use them while operating machinery at work and while driving the van on the motorway as it's more relaxing.

I am currently using Mouldex Spark plugs but will get the ultimate ear one soon. Much prefer riding with ear plugs. Saves a headache and I can concentrate more on what is around me and on the road ahead.

I buy about 30pairs for £5 on ebay. Only use each pair for one ride/day but it works out to be peanuts and they are good quality for the price.

I use the earsoft fx ones, linked to in DanF's post. Used to do a 100 miles a day on the motorway to work, and these were a necessity! Only downside to wearing them is i'm not sure how to rig up a walkie talkie comm system with other riders, as the ear plugs may prevent insertion of an ear piece.

With regards to comm's and ear plugs me an a friend used to have walkie talkies with a mic and flat speakers joined to a push to talk button. Mic sticks in your lid with the speakers that tuc in just above the chin strap joins to they are opposite the ears, then a connection that joins up to the push to talk button which straps to your left grip or handlebar which then connects to the walkie talkie.
They were ok for close comms (as in 20m or so) but are affected by other random users on the same channel, like taxi drivers lol. So we have just ordered the new Cardo Scala Q3 multiset bluetooth units, up to 1km connection (based on terrain) but is auto volume adjustment and is meant to be more than loud enough with ear plugs at motorway speeds.

I use Howard Leight "Quiet" earplugs. They have a plastic pin which makes putting them in extremely easy; I always find getting the disposable ones in quite tricky, especially in my right ear for some reason. These are washable/reusable and each pair comes in a neat plastic flip top box with a built in hanging clip. Cheap as well, 10 pairs can be had for a fiver on eBay which will last for ages.

Also UltimateEar here. Love 'em. I have two sets, one of which is wired (for sound).

Yep, my first time using earplugs was when I was on a riding assessment thing with work.

Chatting to the guy and he gave me a pair of throw-away ones. I thought "yay" but then I rode/felt like I rode rubbishly and it was quite distracting. I ended up taking them off for the rest of the time out.

I did get used to it eventually though, obviously! As said above, if I do without now it feels almost 'painful'/unbearable at speed! (maybe painful is overreaction but it's damn hellish!)
