Went into town on Saturday and was quite surprised at how many shops are still taking pre-orders for the PS3 and guaranteeing a launch console.

I don't recall this being the case for when the PS2 came out so what gives?

Is it because of the price, are Sony flooding us with loads of consoles this time round or is there some other reason?

In the end I gave in and put £50 down at Competitor!, purely speculative that I can get my money back and sell it on if I don't like it. Now i'm a bit concerned that I'll lose out doing this, given the amount available it would appear!

How will you lose out?

If you cant sell it on ebay for major profit, return it to the shop unopened for a full refund.

Two stores now have emailed me saying they have enough to go around to guarentee pre-orders and then some.

Either they havent sold as many as they thought or congratulations to sony for atleast one of the next gen launches getting enough consoles to go around. :D

Yeah wasn't so much losing out from fleecing ebayers, more whether I'd get the same money back if I have a play and then decide to sell.

Then just take it back and lie and say it keeps locking up. Then say your so dissapointed you dont want another you want your money back.

Shout loudly and before you know it the ps3 will be laballed on the internet as having lock up problems ;)

consoles are usually under supplied for a reason so either sony dont believe in building up hype to make more money (which i highly doubt) or interest inst that high right now but might pick up

I'm not sure interest is quite as high for the PS3.

A number of on-line retailers are still guaranteeing launch day consoles and one has just added a copy of Blu-Ray 'Click' (movie) to the deal to make it sweeter.

I certainly wouldn't bank on being able to sell the thing on for a profit on ebay, but you should be able to at least get your money back.

As you all should know there is certainly no such thing as a "guaranteed launch day PS3".
Ask any of these stores that say so if they would be willing to give you £10 if they fail to deliver...

My mate that works at GAME was told by the chains managers in a meeting that no more PS3's are likely to be available until late October/November.

I thought he was pulling my leg at first but there is the same stories online. Sony are losing so much money getting together enough consoles for the European launch that they are unlikely to make a batch until a few months on. It is possible they make a couple of hundred or something, but then its pot luck whether your local store even gets one

Excellent I can feel the bay £££££'s already.

That's weird. I thought there was an abundance of them everywhere else in the world. I'll hold on for one though, at least until there are some games I can't live without and it's not silly money.

The whole of Europe is only getting a shared One Million Consoles on launch day. Not sure how many out of this million is allocated to the UK. But rpe-orders for the PS3 has live for 2 weeks from the main online retailers and they are still saying they have stock of their allocation to go around. Kinda shows that there isn't much interest for the PS3 as normally guarentee pre-orders are normally snapped up in a couple of hours.

Just been to York for the day and ended up in Toys R Us 'Extra'. There was a 'PS3 Managers Special' Hand Written on a board outside which said "Guaranteed PS3, No deposit, £425".

So good news if you want one and I don't think there will be any problem getting one for launch.

Slightly more worrying was that one of the selling points was "Plays PS1 & PS2 games"... heh, guess Sony aren't being quick passing on the recent developments down the supply chain ;)

It's because it hasn't been advertised properly yet. I bet a lot of people don't even know its coming in less than a month!

Plenty of them to go round by the looks of things. I must have had about 10 emails from various game sales sites "guaranteed" for launch day. Blooming right there should be too, its been delayed long enough as it is for EU.

No store is allowed to guarantee a launch day console, no store has been told their allocation units - it's all 100% speculation.

You'll be reserved one as they come in, so they higher you are up the list the better!

If there not allowed to do this, then why was I told that I was guaranteed one on launch day?

Misleading the general public can get them in hot water cant it?

Not at all, if you read the small print of most, if not all console preorder sheets it will tell you that it guarantee's you one as they come in, if you are say 5th in the list and six come in then great. But If you were 7th, then you are guaranteed one when the next batch come in.

EDIT: Looking on the internet it may seem to be a different story as perhaps more units are allocated there, to the main warehouse. My bad! :p

I put my 50£ down last Thursday and was told that theres been 100 orders thus far, if the posters saying 'guaranteed' were still up at the time of placing my deposit, how much chance do I have of seeing a launch day console?
