Ive got a load of MP3s withough ID3 tags, but they all have the file name convention of;02 - Vangelis - Antartica - Antarctic Echoes.mp3 which is Track number - Artist - Album - track name. What is the best and esiest way of generation ID3 tags from that lot? No way am I doing it manually as there are loads.

Thanks.

I use tag & rename, will do exactly what you want, might take a little bit of fiddling at first but its an amzing piece of software.

Another vote for Tag & Rename. I use it all the time. You can set the mask to exactly what you want and tag from filename. If you're quick you can do all of them in the 30 day trial version as it is fully functioning

i use a program called fixtunes

it costs a little but well worth it

i reworked over 10k tunes with it recently

no way i would have done that manually

Seconded on musicbrainz. Didn't realise it managed to do it from filenames though (thought it needed some basic meta). It also has audio fingerprinting as well. Anyway, musicbrainz if it works for you, absolutely amazing app.

Edit: theres a new version out than was linked above called musicbrainz picard. Its slightly different though, its more album based rather than track based, so you import a bunch of files, cluster it into an album, hit lookup and then it finds the album and tags the tracks based on what you select.

The old one was more automated and track based. So it could screw up if you just let it do its thing and then disengage brain.

Excellent guys, thanks a lot. I'll give those suggestions a go and see how it turns out. I might actually get my entire collection into some sort of order for once.

Musicbrainz is a very cool piece of software, but I've found it's not 100% accurate.

I use mp3tag as mentioned, and if all your un-ID'd songs are named in the format you mention, then it's a breeze setting it up to pick out the artist/track name/number etc etc from the filename and creating the ID3 tag. And freeeeee :)
