i used to use a proggy called Tag & Rename, which i found worked well on my old pc, however don't think i had a legal copy :o and have since built a new pc using vista, just wondering what free where proggys are out there and easy to use for getting album art and working out what the mp3's are?

Music Brainz Picard, and accept no second rate substitute, well that is unless you like wasting your time tagging :)

Install the Album Art and Disc number plugin though.

Album case + album booklet = writing in all the details yourself = winrar :D

All your tracks are guaranteed to be tagged properly and standard (composer layout eg. E.Simmons, F.Buxton Vs. simmons/buxton.) Call me anal but it's just nice doing it all yourself. Takes time but looks great once you've finished :).

Not used MusicBrainz then? It very rarely goes "wrong".

Musicbrainz and Mediamonkey seem to give me the best results

This man knows where its at, and MediaMonkey too, without doubt one of the most powerful combinations on the market :)

How can you "prefer" to waste time writing dull things? MusizBrainz shouldn't freeze up at all, its mature product now, the UI just a little crazy (so i can understand if you dont know how to use it) because they're concentrating on that for their next release...

yep. i tried it, froze on me as well. 2 hours it spent scanning my collection and then froze up, having done nothing.

bit of a waste of time really lol

Exactly the same problem I had, I thought I'd leave it for a couple of hours, but it didn't do anything.

It doesn't take long doing the tags myself either.

I use Audioshell... Very easy to use (right click an mp3 and its there just like the file properties)..

No idea what's happening there guys, i've done 12k tracks with MusicBrainz, and although i had a few problems with the earlier releases (crashing) i've not run into anything recently. Although to be fair, i never tried scanning all 12k at once, i do them in chunks, so i can keep track of what i'm doing. Maybe 1-2k at a time.
