kids have been messing with 'deep thought' and now the icons are highlighted, and i can't remember how to un-highlight them.
Ta :)

icons are highlighted? .... then click off the screen?

A screenshot would be nice ...

and what is 'deep thought'? :)

3 guesses but again a screenshot may be helpful.

1. Theyve went into the Advanced settings for Display Settings and changed the background colour for icon text

2. They've done something in the Accessibility settings

3. Your Ctrl key is stuck

(Assuming you're a h2g2 fan and Deep Thought is your PC of course ;))

i'll check what you said. i did do it ages ago when playing about and imediately un-did it, and know one of the spogs has done it i can't remember were it was sorted.

yup hitchhikers guide :)

Hmmm looks like drop shadows have been turned off, go to system properties-advance-performance on the visual effects tab scroll down and look for " use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop" and tick it

Hope that helps

Right click -> Arrange Icons by... -> Lock Web Items on Desktop.

Do I get a cookie? :D

PS I like your background...

well it's still there!
although it's kinda gone now cos i've hidden not 'show desktop icons' ;)
don't think it's because its PNG cos it's done it on all my previous desktops which most were JPEG.

as for the desktop itself i can't claim reward for it i came across it via The All New Desktop Thread, Images No Larger Than 800x600 thread(p147), kudos goes to 'trifid' for bringing it into our lives :)
his link is to flickr which you have to log onto (quick & free) and is called tacgnol vs longcat

What this man said, just tested it by unticking, applying then ticking again, defo controls the icon background.

You could try applying the default theme again, let it redo the visual settings or in system properties > advanced > performance, set it to performance > apply, then set back to appearance > apply again.

changing the theme didn't work, i was begining to think i'd just have to live with no icons on the desktop, not that its a bad thing....
but we have the winner !!
performance back to appearance has sorted it - Many Thanks
