ok i've just built a new rig.
conroe ,asus p5n-e sli
using onboard lan.
off a fresh install I'm not getting e-mail or www.
never had any problems before getting going, but I'm far from an expert ;)
I'm with NTL, ntl box does work i'm using my laptop for now, so it's not that.
it installed nv armour all, couldn't see that was stopping anything. I've installed new forceware drivers (8.43) and on re-boot armour all icon went off desktop, i did try to uninstall armour all but couldn't find it?, but new drivers seems to have got shot of it?
i've got comodo firewall & f-secure a/v on it now, add remove programs isn't showing any other a/v or firewall (but it didn't before?)
i've used the nw cable i'm using for the laptop on the new rig instead of the main pc's one so it's not the cable either.
hardware manager says network card is working, and if i unplug the cable it shows as unplugged in the icon at bottom of the screen - I'm using XP pro btw.

I've got 'ris' drivers from asus website - what are they should i change them?

after fresh install i just used the wizzard and put in pop & smtp and my e-mail acc details the same as i've doen before, but it isn't working.

I've used ping in cp and it says 'destination host unreachable.'

what are your ideas?

You're connecting directly to the cable modem?
You need to switch it off and back on, wait for the lights to stop flickering and reconnect it if you change the machine it's attached to.

If this is a fresh PC being connected, you need to register your MAC address with VM/NTL.

https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html

You will need the PID that is on some of the initial paperwork they sent you. If it asks for a serial number for your cable modem - ntl-ct8-cj486 (though this may be on the modem itself)

(NTL drop you in a sandbox corner of their network until you are fully registered)

You shouldn't have to go through that, unless it's a new modem.

Tried connecting the PC to the laptop, manually assigning addresses to both machines' network cards and seeing if it works?

tried pinging 127.0.0.1 to see if your On-board LAN is working?

I've just done that, and 0% loss so OK
so that means the network adapter is working yes, so it's a firewall thing, as it isn't the modem or ntl as it working on the lappy

i'll uninstall all a/v & firewall and see what happens.

cheers

You can ping 127.0.0.1 without any network card. It proves nothing, bar that some of Windows' network components work.

Does the machine get a (useful) IP when it's connected to the cable modem?

how would i check that - ip config?

something i did come across, when you install XP it names 'workgroup' or like as name, i was going to change it, but then re-typed, when i was looking at a network wizard it said changing that can cause isp's esp cable not to work, what is the original name xp gives, is it workgroup? also would that be case sensative ? , if so where do i change it / check it ?

another odd thing is usb 2 isn't on and i've gone sp1?

Ta!

Yes, the output from ipconfig /all would be useful.

The workgroup is irrelevant. Changing it won't break your internet connection.

it's got my host name
no primary dns suffix
node type - broadcast
ip routing enabled - no - doesn't sound right?
wins proxy enabled - no

thats the main one with no network cable attached. whilst i do this on the laptop, i'll turn them off and conect it up see if owt changes?

There should be an Ethernet section which is getting an IP Address. If you are directly connecting to your Cable Modem, then the numbers will be from NTL\VM. So your IP Address is more like 81.98.153.123 and gateway 81.98.153.1 (i.e. NTL supplied numbers)

Best bet.... connect the working machine and do an ipconfig /all

Take a note of what is there (i.e. print it out)

Now reconnect the machine that is not working, power cycle modem, and do another ipconfig /all (rememeber to wait for the sync\ready lights to come back on on your modem before trying to check for an IP Address)

It sounds like you have a badly configured Ethernet card there..... So start comparing it to your "working" machine. i.e. network card properties should have "client for Microsoft networks", "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft networks" and "Internet Protocol TCP/IP". Nothing else should be there. Then the properties of TCP/IP should be to let DHCP to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" :)

well the strangest thing has happened!
i was doing as above, and was only giving auto ip add and subnet nothing else

so i power off the modem to do ipconfig again, i boot up again and here i am on my new rig
god alone knows whats happened as i've re booted the modem about 4 times.

anyway CHEERS :)

i was just limbering up to reinstall XP again.

back on again, again for particular reason

any ideas what could be the reason for this, a re-install of XP in order?
