Hi chaps,

Has anyone come across a easy way to manage your mp3 libary? I have got bucket loads of mp3s on my harddrive, when I import them into WMP11, for some reason a lot of my albums come out like this

e.g. I add a album into the libary, but three or so tracks get split off from the album to create another album with just one song on!?

Has anyone got any ideas around this as its very annoying, oh, and please ignore the S-Club 8 song playing :p

wmp is a pain in the arse for that. its because it rely's on the tags to be spot on. you can either use an app to sort through all the tags or use a music player that sorts by directory rather than tag.

....directories for the win imo.

i use foobar2000. bit of a pain to set up, but its so easy when its sorted. album list on the left, sorted by directory as they are on the drive. double click an album and it plays the tracks, putting the track list on the right. oooh so easy.

I manage them in Windows Explorer (artist\album) then just use winamp for playing.

If you keep it neat you don't need software to manage your collection.

thanks for the replys guys :)

I usually wont be bothered by it, I always normally just go through Explorer to play my music, but to use Media Center, you really need to sort out the tags really :(

i use to hate itunes but its actually quite good after using it!

although its slow

lol itunes is a joke

foobar2000 + sorted directories = win

Totally.

It really is a must to organise your music into directories. And with singles I just organise them into my own albums and then in their own directories. Takes a bit of effort initially but its so easy to maintain its well worth it.

After 9 years of Mp3 pleasure it is the only way.

And to the original OP, you will need to edit the ID3 tags. It is worth bearing in mind that WMP organises Mp3s by Album Artist for some crazy reason. So to make sure your albums contain all the correct songs you need to make sure that all the Album Artist tags match for that album.

Have fun.
;)

Sorry to hijack the thread again but does anyone know of a program that will auto-create directories from just loads of MP3 files?

Whats wrong with Winamp? (**prepares for onslaught**)

It's the only thing I've used to play my music for years. I know this discussion is about managing your mp3's, but if you have the basic tag info, artist/track name/album thats all I use. Just go into Audio section in the Local media section (I use the MMD3 skin, not sure if this is the same for all skins) and search for what track/artist/album you want to listen to, double click on any track, it plays all the search results and bob's your uncle, doesn't matter how your music is scattered across your drives.

The only joke about iTunes is how so many people write it off because they cant get it working strait away and some of its 'nanny' features.
Which is funny because people will often spend hours configuring alternatives, and spend even more time trying to automate things that are already automated in iTunes.
:p

I see your problem, it seems to have inserted some s club and justin timberlake into your collection. I suggest a full format.

Too true imo.

I like my method of managing my libary, start as you mean to go on! Name one track sloppy, and before you know they'll be a mess.

I've still got a few to capatalize, but I leave that for when shuffle finds them. :) I also wish I could get it to store them album > artist > track :/

Do my eyes deceive me, or in 2007 do people still advocate managing their music into folders and then playing it back by browsing to it and loading it into Winamp?

How is this in any way preferable to letting something like iTunes manage the whole lot with a database based on the tags (which you set correctly in the first place). How am I supposed to do any sort of basic searching (all songs from 3 artists in a certain range of years) using Windows Explorer and folders? Not to mention smart playlists. Honestly I think the people who cling onto manually sorting music into folders must have blindly clicked "Yes" to everything iTunes asked and ended up with their music library rearranged, or have something against tagging.
