So I'm visiting my brother who lives in Europe, I bought a 780 Ti for him for his birthday and I'm going to be taking it with me but I don't want to put it in the hold luggage as I've seen with my own eyes how the baggage handlers throw the cases around.

I don't want to get to the airport, Go through the security gate and have the security make up a rule on the spot which has happened many times before with John Lennon airport, I know as I use to work there handling complaints.

The email I got back after asking them was like it was written by a child and I couldn't understand a word of it.

So in short, Has anyone taken a computer component in their hand luggage ?

I've transported boxed GPU on Ryanair flight from Europe to UK in handluggage, so should be ok in the opposite direction and with Easy too.

Take my laptop all the time which is a non issue so don't see why this would be. They might ask you to put it in a separate tray, that's about as difficult as it should get

Could you use it as a weapon? I can't see why else it would be stopped, people take whole laptops through, why would one component be any different?

Can you paste the email you got back?

you should be ok, you can take entire laptops onboard so a component shouldn't be an issue.

True but last time I went over I had a pack of RAM in my bag and they wanted to take it off me for "Security reasons" I demanded to see the exact rule and made a complete show of the big fat greasy security guy trying to rob me, I got the ram through in the end.

Sorry dude but the email has got a lot of personal info on it and I really can't be bothered going into paint and editing it out :p

You are lucky you got on your flight.

The reason they won't want to give you a definitive answer in an email is the rules change daily and they are not in control of what you can and cannot take through security.

Security could well take it off you and then you would come back to them.

I used to attend some LAN/tournies in the US and took various components in hand luggage without any issues (protip: don't take a fallout alarm clock in hand luggage that looks like a bomb as one person I know did - or rather tried to do :|).

strap 2 blocks of marzipan to it and scream allah ackbar lots as you walk through the scanners.

If in doubt, call the Airline.

Also take the email you got from them with you. or call them, and ask them to send you another email confirming it.

Depends on the airport, i flew to Glasgow recently with an sma crimp tool, Gatwick let me on with it in my hand luggage, coming back Glasgow wouldn't let me on the flight with it!

actually serious question from me

i wouldnt mind brining my motherboard
gpu
ram
cpu
few HDDs
and SSD
on a flight as hand luggage Thats gonna weigh a fair bit i guess but no different to just the GPU? or will they wanna start scanning Hard drives for pron etc ?

Can you imagine the call though? I doubt they'd know what a GPU is and they'd probably end up saying now purely because they have not idea what you're talking about.

It's airport security you need to worry about, not the airline. I took a PS4 as hand luggage recently no problem. All bets are off if the person checking your bag is a complete tool.

Make sure you double check the size of your bag against the sizes allowed on their website. I'm not sure when it was introduced, but I flew with them over the weekend and now you have to use a smaller bag (50 x 40 x 20cm) to be GUARANTEED a space in the cabin. You can use a larger bag (56 x 45 x 25cm) and still take it in the cabin, but they say if it's full it might end up going in the hold.

My mates had a larger sized bag and there was no room for it in the overhead lockers but they still got away with putting it under their seats, but you may not be so lucky!
