EATX Problem - Maximus Extreme

As most are aware I am building my system. But, I've came across a problem.

In the Maximus IV Extreme manual it says "Do not forget to connect the 8-Pin EATX12v power plug. Otherwise the system won't boot".

I had not connected that. As such, the system was turning on, then off, then on and the red CPU light was active. When I attempted to connect the 8 pin I noticed 4 of the pins had been covered.

The problem I have is can I remove the cover connecting the 4 pins and connect an 8 pin without problems? I don't have a 4-pin. The corsair 1200W came with a bundle of wires but no 4 pin.

What purpose does the EATX12v serve?

Thanks

Yes, this is just a removable plastic cover. Remove it carefully and plug in the 8pin (4+4pin) 12V power connector from your PSU.

This power connection provides your CPU with the extra power it needs to run.

yes, remove the cover and stick it in.

Its there just to provide extra power, simple as.

The whole point of the cover is so you can use only the 4 pins instead. If you have 8 pins, connect them. The extra power has been standard for a long time.

Remove cover, plug in 8 pin.

Still an issue with the CPU as I'm getting error 58 which means "CPU self test failed or cpu cache error".

Never had this issue before.

The 8pin splits into two, so 4 pin is there, just a 4+4, and as said many times, just remove cover, and plug the 8pin in :)

& for the error, can you try re-seating the CPU?

Yeah, I took the heatsink off, tried to reseat it. Still the same.

Would the EZ_PLUG_1 and EZ_PLUG_2 being unplugged make a difference?

It may be worth ago, especially as your running 3 gpu's.

Also have you tried a CMOS reset and only 1 memory module in various slots.

Worst case remove all gpu's bar one and see how you get on

Ok, I left 1 memory module in and it seems to be stuck on A2 which is IDE Detect. I presume thats because there is no OS installed. Still, no video atm though. Should I use the stock video card whilst booting? Do I need to install anything for the GTX 580's to work in 3-Way?

In the stress of the moment I forgot the connect the DVI cable. All work now :D

Thanks guys. To much stress can sometimes make a problem seem worse than it is and you actually miss the simple tests.
