Bought an item off a German user; under postage it said "Postage to UK - 12€", but it also said "be aware that postage to abroad varies in price, please ask for details."

He's now trying to charge me 22€ for postage; can he do that  I took a screenshot of where it lists the UK postage costs, so I assume he can't get away with it

Depends on the weight of the item in question and whether or not it's by air mail, air mail is pretty expensive over seas.

With overseas postage it is always best to e-mail them first and ask. I always state a UK postage price and say overseas postage will be calculated on request. If they dont contact me before winning the auction they have to accept the postage i charge.

If he stated it would be a maximum of €12 then that's what it should be. If he said, that it *might* be around €12, but he would have to confirm it on winning the bid, then that it acceptable.

but it also said "be aware that postage to abroad varies in price, please ask for details."

And not only do ebay allow sellers to increase postage but he also warned you in the listing! If you'd have contacted him and received a definite price then he wouldn't be able to shift.
