I ordered Applecare off Ebay - seller had good rating etc - however the code didn't work. I complained and requested a refund.

They then sent me a new code plus said they would refund me. I was obviously surprised at this but have since had a refund mail from paypal.

This seems very odd and I feel like I am being conned some how - am I being paranoid or is there something I need to do / check?

I paid through paypal and the money is showing as refunded.

The seller has also e-mailed me an apology - its just the free code has made me suspicious!! Am I being too cynical or are they just trying to avoid any negative feedback?

Am not very up on the whole Ebay / Paypal thing.

it may have been that you were buying a stolen apple care in which case they won't have been charged for it, or they get them a lot cheaper that they sell them for.

So you've got the working code and a refund, but you feel like you've been conned?

I suspect it's just a genuine seller who made a mistake and is putting that right at their expense. Nothing to worry about here.

I would suspect that something is up to be honest. What product was the applecare for?

I can't confirm, but have read a fair bit, that these applecare codes can actually be generated by fraudsters and are accepted by apple, only for them to show up as invalid months down the line. I have no experience of this, this is only what i have read through googling the subject, and the information displayed to me may also be incorrect.

I dont know if the second code works or not I just find it a bit odd that they would provide another code for free and a refund when all I requested was a refund.

Edit - the seller has just called me to see if the second code worked???!

Probably checking it works. As i say, if you google this, there's quite a bit of info out there.

I wouldn't think you're in any peril financially or otherwise tbh.

Get him to send you the box it came in! or a photo of it etc.

I've just replied thanking them for the refund but that I didn't want the second code.

I cant believe they would give away a genuine code and don't want to find out too late that its fake.

Genuine reseller for me I think!!

Sounds like a genuine seller who made a mistake and wanted to make an amends for it!

Who are they? I will need to get some Applecare for my iMac soon.

It would be great if you could let me know as well as I need some Applecare for my Macbook.

He most likely gave you the code in the hope that you wouldn't leave negative feedback. If it is a super seller or even just a normal seller selling a few of these applecare one negative feedback could have an effect on his business.

Either way I would have taken the code and the refund happily tbh. I mean how could it be a scam ?

I bought a MBP with Apple Care in store in September.
Got it home tried registering the AC various times all of which returned a not valid product key.
Phoned Apple, they asked for the code on the box, waited a week and it was up and running.
God knows why a brand new unopened product would have an invalid registration key, but it did. So I guess I'm saying this could've been a genuine mistake hence the seller being so forthcoming.

I'm not saying whether in this instance it was real or fake but I think the OP has done the correct thing.

I still disagree. If it got reversed in a couple of months he'd have had the money back so could have gone and bought it again elsewhere anyway.

Yup, you're right Feek. As i said he's not in any strife financially or otherwise.

However if in doubt, leave it out. Just is not worth the hassle to save a few £. He could have had it reversed after his 1 year ownership for example and then where would he stand? Unable to purchase new applecare or a complete ballache to sort out otherwise.

Happy New Year to all btw :)
