Ebay Applecare help!

I bought AppleCare for my Macbook last night from someone called ToshComputers. They have a 100% feedback, a high feedback score and a pretty good price so i thought why not! Somebody on another forum recommended them also.

Once i paid i got my code within a few hours and it registered fine. If you want to buy AppleCare i highly recommend them.

I bought a MBP with Apple Care in store in September.
Got it home tried registering the AC various times all of which returned a not valid product key.
Phoned Apple, they asked for the code on the box, waited a week and it was up and running.
God knows why a brand new unopened product would have an invalid registration key, but it did. So I guess I'm saying this could've been a genuine mistake hence the seller being so forthcoming.

or the seller stole your code and sold it to n111ck :p

Now that the conspiracy debate has died down, let me add my 5 cents. I find it remarkable that old-fashioned good customer service sparks a debate. Must be a sign of the service quality people have come to expect on the net. It's a simple issue really. We send several hundred AppleCare codes and boxes every week; we didn't cross one off the list and sent it twice; and for the inconvenience of the client we sent a replacement and credited the original purchase. This was a pretty easy decision from our end, and I am quite comfortable with it. Hope this help. Cheers, Jens

Just wondering, how come AppleCare is cheaper on the net than in the shops?

I suspect it's just a genuine seller who made a mistake and is putting that right at their expense. Nothing to worry about here.
I have to admit that I'm feeling slightly smug now :) I wasn't the only one..
Obviously come across the rarity that is a genuine honest seller.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Apple resellers get an additional discount when least 40% of the unit sales price is sold in add-on accessories, such as AppleCare, RAM upgrades etc. Since there are only very few non-authorized Apple resellers worldwide, the price can be held high throughout their controlled distribution system and adds considerably to the profitability of the firm.

It's not a case of people not expecting good customer care. It's more to do with something looking too good to be true and not wanting to be caught out in case it is.
In this instance, as with many others, it looks like the sale is legitimate. However, there are many times when this is not the case, and how is the buyer able to easily differentiate between the two?

For me, staying ahead of the pack is being prudent and limiting my exposure to any possible headache, and if that means paying a few more pounds for my products, then to me it is worth it.

Thank you to the wholesaler for taking the time to explain his position.

AppleCare products are among the safest to purchase web-wide, as you can instantly tell if they are legitimate or not. You can even test a code to make sure it is fresh, before you register it, and so you know whether the purchase is a good one long before your credit card is charged (buying you time to dispute the transaction, if it is a bad one). Once the AppleCare code registers with Apple, Apple's system allows the printing of a 'proof of coverage' certificate, which is handy to have when you need service or want to sell the unit. There are the off instances where a number is transposed or a sold code is not crossed off the list, but with several thousand AppleCares sold, we have never had a problem that coverage was denied or the code wasn't accepted by Apple.

Thanks, Feek.

Here is ONE way to tell the difference between 'possibly dodgy' or 'worth considering'. Ask if the seller also sells full sealed AppleCare boxes. If they do, they have a supply line directly back to Apple or an Apple reseller, and thus there is greater likelihood that their numbers are genuine, than if they only sell numbers. Also it means that if a code is bad, and that can always happen for a number of reasons, you have a better chance of getting it replaced.

There are quite a number of Chinese who sell codes only from the US, and that is all they sell in terms of Apple stuff, so you have to wonder how they stumbled across a few hundred codes if they have no other relationship with Apple and its products.

Hope this helps.

Recently sold a MBP with apple care on ebay.

When you buy/register a machine for apple care, apple simply registers it against the serial number, not ever a person. IE: anyone can walk in with the covered machine for help.

Most people asked me for the serial number, i just provided the link to the apple site for checking and serial number and it simply comes up with a little chart saying : Yes or no.

People who seem nervous to give out serial codes need not be with apple, as no personal data is registered to the machine in reference to apple care.

In order to register AppleCare you need to have an account with Apple where you give your personal details to set-up the account and then use the same account to register AppleCare against the specific unit. You cannot register an Applecare warranty at www.apple.com./support if you do not first set up an Apple account... You are confusing the issue of whether a person is asked for ID when they want service for a covered machine and how you register. These are two different pairs of shoes.
