Hi

I sold a camera lens on ebay for quite a bit of money. I sent it insured, etc. etc. Buyer got it and claimed it didn't work in autofocus and the manual focus was grindy.

I got him to confirm the serial number on the lens (which I had photographed) and paid for him (insured) to send it back. I have it now, and it is indeed the same lens he sent me, and it works fine! I guess I basically have to refund him though?!

Now, I've wasted about £20 on postage so far, and need to sell it again now. Is there anything ebay will do in regards to a buyer returning a non- faulty item? I am guessing no, but thought I would ask anyway.

Cheers!

(p.s. in before "never use ebay, it's full of scammers", etc.)

It's eBay ic you only lost £20 and item is fine I'd say it's a blessing in disguise, sell it elsewhere.

You could try claim it back but I suspect be allot of hassle as eBay always sides with buyers on everything

He probably tried it on but got burned because you were smart enough to take precautions.

Good job 20 quid wasted but you have your lense be happy !

As an aside, what body was he using, as some bodies have internals to work autofocus lens, and some do not.
Found this out with my macro lens, when a friend tried it on her camera body and it wouldn't focus at all.
Turned out her body was a lower model.

Yeah he got back to me just now. This is the issue. He is using it on a camera body which is not compatible with the lens in question (It's pretty well documented if you google).

I've put in a report to ebay to say he is abusing the returns policy, as he should do his homework before making me waste £20 on postage, but I don't suppose it will make any difference.

Yes and 'fraid not. Just count your blessings its actually the same camera and its not broken!

If it went for auction you should have an option to offer it immediately to an underbidder for the amount they bid rather than relist it.

As for the returns policy, thats pretty much the same for any online seller you're being subjected to the same rules.

People indeed do not do their homework or read what they're buying. I've just sold a cheap vintage pocket watch on eBay. The buyer sent me a message saying it doesn't work, it runs for like 4 seconds then stops, this means the battery must be dead. I sent a message back saying there's no battery, you have to wind it up. Like it said in the item description. Duh.

Lucky he didn't break it to claim it was not as described.

Nothing you can do, eBay & PayPal are the worst for sellers. I'm not going to be selling any further high value items on there, best to assume you're going to be ripped off and only sell what you can afford to loose.

Have you even asked him to therefore cover the postage cost to have it returned to you, you never know he might be a decent guy.

Yeah have you even asked if he will pay, it's completely his fault. If it was my mistake id being glad to get a refund for my own stupidity.

Yeah if it's a genuine mistake you're lucky. He may well pay returns. And if he doesn't it's not the end of the world. With a camera lens could be much worse!
