Yes, it does belong here :p

Sold my Q6600 on ebay, was 100% working (I used it to post the ad to sell it!).

Sent it to the guy incredibly well packaged, was in the plastic case that CPUs come in, with CM thick high density foam on either side of that, then bubble wrap and finally a padded envelope. Even RM would have had trouble damaging that.

It's arrived and of course, I get an email saying it's not working. Fun.

So could you possibly help me fix whatever issue the guy might be having? He's been perfectly polite so far so I'm not going to yell scammer just yet :p

Hi.

Received this CPU today, took it straight out of bag and case, took out my Core 2 Duo E6550, put new paste on the Q6600, inserted it in to my motherboard which is an Asus P5K (intel p35 chipset) and fully supporting of the q6600 CPU.

The system refuses to boot, with reset bios, no additional hardware in system (unplugged all non-essentials even HDD) and only 1 stick of RAM instead of the 4 usual I have.

Took it out, put back my E6550 and system boots first time.

It seems that the CPU is faulty.

Motherboard is 100% compatible. Latest BIOS.

Do you have any suggestions?

He's done the obvious, so I've suggested that he make 100% certain he has cleared the BIOS (remove the power cord, press the power button then remove the BIOS battery for at least 20s).

I'll also see what PSU he has, but I'm not sure what else to check with the info given as I've never used that particular board.

Thanks!

TL : DR - Sold Q6600 working, arrives 'faulty', help me sort it please.

The worrying thing is if the buyer is running the 6550 then he is running the latest* BIOS in order to run his cpu!

* Or the same bios which should run the Q6600.

Yeah, pain in the arse really as I know that the CPU works.

Oh well, have asked what the rest of his system is (PSU, GPU etc.), the extra 30w from the Q6600 might be enough to push the PSU. Although it's unlikely.

The Q6600 is practically bullet proof so I'd be very suprised if he'd managed to kill it or it was damaged in transit.

May be something really silly hes forgotten to connect up or he could be trying to pull a fast once and return a dead/old CPU to you and get a free upgrade tho the email isn't typical of that.

Aye, and as said it was packaged really well.

Possibly, the P5K Deluxe has an 8 pin. Maybe he has a 4 pin plugged in and the higher wattage CPU requires an 8. I shall ask for a picture.

There's always that with eBay, although I hope not.

Potentially a good point about the extra CPU power header - you will definitely need all the potential power connectors for the Q6600 as it draws a fair amperage (I know some will take 2x 4 pin but work fine with dual cores with only 1x 4 pin).

Even at stock speed, a 4 pin ATX 12v will still be sufficient to run the cpu, (quite often forgot to plug both sides in on two boards, 680i sli + p5q deluxe). As mentioned, the q6600's are pretty robust. Could have been damaged in transit though, but then it could be a scam as well.

Suprised about the 680s, I've found they (and nForce boards in general) struggle without all the power connectors with 65nm Quads. Not so much experience with the p5q.

One thing to make sure is he has the correct bios settings for the cpu. If he has the wrong DRAM settings this can cause a similar effect to what he describes. Sometimes the motherboard tries to set it's own settings or there is a simple conflict somewhere where he has to manually configer it to the appropriate setting despite doing bios reset. I have had this experience in the past with motherboards and cpus doing stuff like that.:o Sucks. :(

Once or twice due to my 8 pin pcie connectors joint being broken, i forgot to connect both. System was ran at stock for a long time as the 680i wasnt any good at oc'ing.
Quick google search threw up this on tomshardware.

I personally never had any issues with just the 4 pins connected, albeit it was only for a short time, and no overclocking.

RM First Class Recorded, so up to £46.

In that case, get a picture, get his BIOS revision, if all looks tick tock, pay him for delivery and refund him if he is unhappy and take a look, unless you want him to come to you or you go to him or order a courier to pick it up and you take a look at it, if that makes sence.

I could, but I'd rather get it working for him than go through the long drawn out claims process with RM. Obviously I will do that, if I have to.

His last message:

I will try this now. I am on the latest BIOS which is 1201 and newer than 0603. I have to downgrade the BIOS to try that. I found out how though here... http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...el=P5K+Premium/WiFi-AP&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

I will get back to you on the result.

Hasn't told me the rest of his spec yet, I'll ask again when he next replies.

Huzzah, he managed to install the 0603 BIOS and it worked straight away.

Result!

I've not looked... but... are you sure his "previous" bios was not "older" than 0603... rather than newer. Seems strange! I think he's definitely upgraded. I'll check and be wrong no doubt.

EDIT* He was correct. His BIOS is about 5 versions later than 0603. Who cares... it works!
