Hi people,

Not sure if it’s old news or not but I’ve just noticed that eBay now charge VAT on purchases. Item was listed as £7.83 from a supposed UK seller as the item says it is located in Uk but having looked at my PayPal email it says I was charger £9.40 in total. They have added £1.57 VAT. Anyone else notice this or is it a new thing?
Thanks

Sounds weird.

A lot of the sellers are VAT registered and your contract is with them, eBay is just a space they host their sale, so eBay has charged VAT a long time, what this makes weird though is now where's the VAT coming from.

Can you upload a screenshot to Imgur?

don't they always say "it's in the UK" but when you look the delivery time you know it's not.

EBAYs crap

So looks like that even if it says the item is located in the uk but the seller is registered in China then you will have to pay VAT. I think I deffo will be looking at the seller information next time before I purchase anything from ebay

You should be paying VAT one way or another now.

Whether it's a Chinese seller and eBay collect it, a foreign independent store that have to collect it themselves, a high value import that's charged at customs or a regular straight UK transaction.

I completely agree that tax should be paid where it’s due. But I also agree that I should also pay that price that a product is advertised as. eBay should always give the total cost of the item + postage where needed

Maybe worth checking your eBay settings, I don't have an account logged in on my phone but when I look at the same item and go to checkout as guest it shows as £9.40 every step of the way.

Ebay collecting VAT/TAX for a product that's sold out of the UK? Shouldn't it not be the countries TAX. Ebay wasn't the one who sold the product it was a seller so why is eBay taking any cut from a product?

20% of that product added VAT is 1.57 so it's UK VAT, unless it's 20% in china too?..

Nope it's only 13% in china so that added VAT must be for the UK.

I'm confused with who's taking what here.

If the item is being imported into the UK then UK VAT is payable.

VAT collection changed on the 1st January.

Now foreign sellers are responsible for registering for, collecting and paying UK supply VAT to HMRC directly (for stuff under £135, over reverts to import VAT process).

Online Marketplaces like eBay work differently though and they collect on behalf of the foreign seller.

Ah! got ya. :)

What happens if you didn't get charged VAT or import duty? Asking for a friend :p
