Quick question: will NON ECC work ok in an old sever that I've been given?

HP Proliant (not being used as a server, just desktop PC) Win 7

It has 3GB of DDR2 800 ECC CL6 ECC at present and I was wondering if I could get rid and install 8GB NON ECC ?

I suspect the answer is NO but thought I'd ask as I know nowt about these things .... and NON ECC is much cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

If it normally uses Unbuffered ECC then standard memory will probably work.

If it normally uses Buffered ECC then standard memory won't work.

Whichever the case you can't normally mix ECC with non-ECC

If you mention the server's model and generation eg ML350 G6 someone will be able to answer your original question with a fair degree of certainty. Alternatively pull one of the existing sticks and copy the text on the labels.
