I though I should give Edge a decent go and have been using it trouble-free since the Anniversary Update. However, today Edge suddenly reset, deleting all my favorites, browsing history, etc.

A quick look in the event log reveals that Edge crashed three times in a row and so it would seem it "recovered" by performing a full reset. Checking the spartan.edb database file, which stores your favorites, reveals that it has been newly created today. In fact the whole user data folder has been deleted and recreated:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC

All without warning or notification to the user!

I managed to recover a copy of the DBStore folder using Previous Versions from which I could recreate the favorites in a better behaved browser.

Needless to say, I am not posting this from Edge.

Sounds like a pretty serious problem. If I lost my favourites I'd be devastated. I've had the same favourites for about 10 years now and there is stuff in there that I would find impossible to find again.

Which browser did you switch back to? I find being able to sync my favourites and extensions and stuff on Google Chrome to be essential and it is the main reason I use that browser. I've tried using Firefox Sync but it never worked as well as Google Chrome.

When I hit the problem a Googled the issue and found quite a few people complaining of the same.

I have gone back to Chrome for the majority of day to day stuff. It is a nice browser, the only concern is the data mining Google do.

For sensitive stuff I have started using Opera with it's built in VPN and ad blocking. Its a pretty good browser, just not good enough to be my default yet.
