I would like to purchase one of the speakers mentioned. My guess is R1900 are slighly better than the R1600 and given the price its best to go for R1900?

I am planning to plug them into PC with a creative sound blaster Z, or some decent sound card

Not really sure whats the difference between them is, apart from 1 having volume and bass knobs and the other treble, volume, bass.

Completely cluless when it comes to OHMs and tweeters and all that stuff. Can anyone summarize in couple of words please? :)

Cheers

AFAIK they are much of a muchness quality wise with the 1900s having slightly better bass and a fair bit more power. Either will work just as well IMO for most people's useage in the type of scenario you'd use either for with the next step up being something like microlabs 7C if you want a bit more volume/bass.

7C's around double the price, but i am guessing they bit better. Will try and stretch my budget for those but 1900 and 1600 are still on the shopping list so far

are microlab 6c's better than 1600 or 1900? i don't have great deal of room for 7c's so have to either get 6c or edifiers

IMO Microlab 6c->Edifier 1600/1900->Microlab 7c - wasn't really suggesting the 7c as such as an alternative to the edifiers but noticed a few people contemplaing the edifiers recently whose requirements were more inline with what the 7c deliver so I thought I'd throw them in there. (They are much bigger, much louder than the edifiers).

6cs are very good at certain things, especially music where treble performance counts but IMO not as good all around speakers for general PC/media use as the edifiers.

i brought the Edifier R1900 last week from here, the base is quite powerful, but the treble not quite so good, quality of build very good....natural wood grain/ chunky/ heavy.

mine are too loud, they're on about 1/3 rd volume whilst gaming, no distortion at all; so that's quite good...they remind me of smaller versions of the Tannoy Mercury S...... very beefy and heavy duty !!!!

weak point :- could do with more treble, but you might not notice this

I also bought them whilst on sale and wondered if you can hear a low hum from the right speaker (with the amp in). Mine seem to make it once switched on regardless of what they are connected too and wondered if others are the same or if it could be a fault? Something else is that when I switch them off there is a slight pop a few seconds after which doesn't seem right (volume is set to lowest and the audio input is still powered).

I've had experience with both. The R1900T's go a solid 10hz lower or so compared to the R1600T. and the mids are slightly more refined and the overall sound is warmer compared to the 1600's. The highs are not as forward as the 1600's but they have a softer tone to them. The trebe is slightly rolled off at 5-8khz though, so that may not appeal to some.

The two "issues" with the 1600's is that the bass dial is completely useless, as setting it to anything above neutral (50%) just muddies the mids more than anything. At neutral settings they sound great, though.

The other (smaller) issue I find with them is that they're too directional - if they're not perfectly at ear level then the sound really changes. This shouldn't be a big problem for a desktop, though.

Considering there's only a £2 difference between the price then get the R1900T's if the size difference isn't an issue.

I've never had humming from mine.

mine dont hum at all they're dead silent, but as said above the sound is very directional, they are much louder/ clearer at ear level than on the ground.

they're great speakers and very heavy/ well made, it looks like 10 mm ply...powerful base but weaker mids to high.

i sit 8ft away from mine; one each side of my Panny tv and they're way too loud at 1/2 volume and the base is too much over half way as well.....

I have mine setup on my desk with my PC so am quite a bit nearer and this might be why I notice the hum more? Do your speakers pop at all when you switch them off?

i dont switch mine off, i only turn off the PC, they definitely dont make a noise, but my last speakers did, they crackled and hummed especially if you touched the cables, if it hums/crackles you could have a faulty connection

It is more of a pop when I turn them off, and it happens even if nothing is plugged into it at all (i.e. just the mains power lead and a single speaker). Do think there is a fault but afaik there doesn't seem to be anything major wrong with them.

Hmm fair enough, I haven't had any speakers this size before so wasn't sure what to expect. Though having read around they shouldn't pop when turned off, as this indicates a DC pulse which should be suppressed (I took a reading with a meter and got 0.9V). Decided to RMA them because of the hum mainly as this sounds out of spec and is really annoying !!

Id personally go for the R1600T.

Controls are on the side, the R1900 is on the rear. They are slightly smaller yet have similar sound quality all be it slightly less but you wouldnt want to be running either set beyond 75% volume anyway as they are very loud for the size.
The Solo7c are louder still but to be honest just seem lacking.

R1600T is what I would get followed extremely closely by the R1900.

:)

yes the other problem is the R1900 has its controls on the back and they are impossible to see in the dark whilst gaming, it's very hard to pick an ideal volume manually if you sit 8ft away.

they need a remote.

ok i had a really good look at the speakers yesterday:-

1..... yes they hum and make a sound when you turn them on and off, but this is the same as my last speakers

2.....the built in Amp gets quite hot when not in use, i'm not happy about this, so i'm going to turn them off when i'm not gaming

3....i took the speakers apart to look inside.....OH DEAR !!! :( all the joints/ plugs/ sockets etc are glued in place with very thick yellow resin...it's everywhere and badly applied, it has spilled out all over the circuit boards/ capacitors/ transformer.... it looks a right mess, a spiders web of melted cheese, i scraped it all off, the coil transformer inside was red hot but the speakers havent been used for 3 days !!!!!!

Damn, guess it really is chinese quality ...! I had read somewhere else that they draw a lot of current whether they are being used or not, hardly ideal! That resin is probably used to try and reduce any hum so might be worse after taking it off :S. Is the hum any worse after taking off the goo? With mine I noticed the hum was really just coming from the right speaker which makes sense as this is where the transformer and circuitry is. Did you take any pictures?

Well I'm not sure about speakers but power supplies used for computers also have that resin/glue which is used to hold the components together.
