I would like to be able to top mount a couple of bikes on my car, it has the flush metal roof rails.

I assume I need to buy bars and a seperate bike carrier to mount to the bars, are they all interchangeable? Does it all have to match (ie all Thule?)

I'd recommend looking at this site:

I was recommended them from here the stuff is good quality and a lot cheaper than the likes of halfrauds.

Got a bundle deal from them, went with Yakima Whispbars and Thule 598 bundle. Not cheap but looks built to last.

If you have a tow ball, it’s worth looking at a bike carrier that can be mounted on one. I had one on our Volvo and really liked it. Much easier than trying to lift heavy bike onto the roof of a car
Much more efficient too as there's much less drag. Drawbacks are the bikes can get pretty grubby in wet weather, and there's the risk of damage from a rear shunt. Also frees up the roof for a roof box - handy if you are going away.

if your bikes electric stick a bag around the motor area when its being transported by car.
you might wanna just cover the bottom bracket area anyway.

a lot of E bikes were failing from water damage, with the owners claiming they never pressure washed their bikes.

turns out driving in the wet at 70mph can force moisture inside components
