So I don't know if this is a big ask, but any classical composers from lets say since 2000.

Any pointers to start or where to look ?

OCuk cant all be full of Drill lovers :)

Out of interest why are you only interested in from 2000?

You’re restricting yourself quite massively. Unless you mean performers/orchestras/conductors from then playing older music.

In which case I recommend Barenboim’s West-East Divan Orchestra. I saw them do Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto 1 with Marta Argerich at the proms a few years ago and it was fantastic.

If you’re completely new a piano concerto is probably a good place to start. Aforementioned Tchaikovsky 1 is good, Rachmaninov no. 2 is also a personal favourite.

All of Beethovens symphonies are good, 5 is very famous (dun dun dun dunnn) 9 is also very good. I’m a massive fan of Schubert’s unfinished symphony and his 5th symphony so I recommend them. Mozart there’s so many, but 40 and 41 are probably the most well known. Mozarts requiem is incredible so I recommend that too. I’m more into piano solo music but I would say that’s not the best to listen to if you’re getting into classical, stick to orchestral stuff.

Next summer I suggest going to the proms, you can turn up on the day and get ‘promming’ tickets really cheap for most days.

Don't restrict yourself to 2000 onwards as you will miss out on an awful lot.

Buy something like "Classic FM Hall Of Fame The Silver Edition" 5cd set listen away and see where it leads you.

On the radio have a listen to Classic FM and Scala Radio.

I know it was quite restrictive but I was trying to get away from what you get on Classic FM and was looking for something more modern composers just to see what 150 of knowledge has done in terms of classical music (I know its a bit of a oxy moron) at the end of the day.

I found Hanna Peel lately which is cross breed of both well at least from I have listened to.

"Classical" in the modern day is quite hard to put a finger on.

Some modern composers who you might consider "classical" in style:

The Cinematic Orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n88MReEC27k
John Adams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWO84mScCcc
Hans Zimmer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l62x9okfPA8

Definitely not new, but Dvorak’s 9th - “From the New World”

It’s just too good. Overpowered, even.

The last movement… oh my god.

Thankyou.

I ended up at movie scores myself. Max Richter got my ear for sure.
He's an interesting composer.

I love this piece - "Maria, The Poet (1913)", from his album "Memoryhouse".

The lyrics, roughly translated:

How many have fallen into this abyss
Gaping away!
The day will come when I will disappear
From the earth's surface
Hardens all sang and fought

Beaming and eager:
And green eye my, and gentle voice
And gold hair
And there will be life with its daily bread
With the forgetfulness of the day
And everything will be-as if under the sky
I was gone!
Changeable as children in every mine
And so long evil
Who loved the hour when the wood in the fireplace
Become ash
The cello and the cavalcade in the most
And the bell in the village.
Me, so alive and real
On gentle earth!
To you all! What am I, nothing
Knew measure
Strangers and their own?!
I address the demand for faith
And asking for love
Day and night, written and spoken:
For the truth Yes and no
For what me so often, too profoundly sad
And only twenty years
Because I direct the inevitable,
The forgiveness of injuries
For all my impetuous tenderness
And too proud
For the rapidity of rapid events
For the truth, for the game.
Listen! Still love me
Because I will die

Is there anything modern comparable to Richard Wagner's Siegfried's Funeral March. Me just typing that out got the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.
