Back with a Vengeance.
my situation is as follows.
when my 6680 is up for renewal i'll have the joyous task of choosing another handset.this is my first symbian phone and although i've only just begun to dip my toe in the water as regards installing applications and generally using it for more diverse uses than a regular phone can provide,i'm enjoying the experience.
i've thought about replacing it with a PDA (something else i've never owned) and a smaller phone, but after reading the chat on here i'm looking at the O2 XDA Exec.
SO,can any of the members tell me why the Exec is so great and what can i do with it above and beyond what my 6680 can do.

all input appreciated.

The exec is so great as its more of a mini laptop than a phone, it runs a windows operating system so can handle bigger programs, and better quality video. It also has a keyboard which makes sending texts easier. Personally I dislike the exec due to its size, but its a good pda/phone combo.

XDA exec has a fantastic screen and not bad keyboard but is bulky.
I have the XDA but don't use it very much, it is simply too big for me personally.
I do tend to use my MDA compact a lot more as it is a decent compromise of features over size. Newer version of the "Jam" offer the functionality of the XDA but at a reduced size.
For me a "Jam" size phone with built in WiFi would be perfect. I would also like Windows Mobile 5 and a decent internal processor, infact to make it really perfect built in GPS as well OR 2 SD slots so that I could use a SD GPS card and run copilot off the secondary SD slot.
Built in keyboards - ok but I don't use it enough to make it a must have for me plus the handwriting recognition is very good and easy to use.

SO in summary XDA Exec - too big for me personally, built in wifi is a plus (a BIG plus) for me but the keyboard doesn't get enough use to warrant its existence.

If I needed a PDA type device for work then they would probably be ideal, but I think the overall size is too much to be used as a usual day-to-day phone.

I was messing about with the T-Mobile version of the XDA Exec (MDA something or other I think) and there is no way I could carry it around all the time, it's just too big.

The screen and keyboard are both very good but the size makes it a no go for me.

I've got an iMate K-Jam (I think O2 call it the XDA Mini-S) and that does the job very nicely. It isn't small by any means but it isn't too big that it annoys me. The keyboard takes some getting used to at first. The screen is good, not in the same class as on the Exec but still very good, certainly much better than on my Dell Axim.

I also have the k-jam, well the o2 version, if you want something smaller but still as good then go for this, great little device to have, inbuilt wifi as well and a lot of the same features as the exec

Another vote for the kjam/mini-s. Once you stick it in corporate mode it's great. It's a bit big but still just about phone sized, I regular make voice calls with it next to my ear and I don't feel like as much of a tool as I would with the Exec.

How does the processor compare to the Imate Jam? Is it relatively slow?

I've not personally used one, but seen many many complaints, and spoken to the guy who review for msmobilenews (i used to do the news for them), and he prefers his m500 to his mini S, as it is "frustratingly slow"

The o2 xda atom looks perfect, as it has the 416mhz processor the m500 has, 128mb of ram, inbuilt wifi, and is considerably smaller than even the m500! Screen might be pushing it size wise though, shaves another .1" off of the already small m500 screen (2.7" vs 2.8").

Looks fantastic, just wish it had been released in an orange guise 3 months ago :P otherwise, my m500 is very sweet, just wish wifi wasn't via an SD card.

What other names does the Atom come under?

Not tried the Jam. I'll have a play with the bosses M500 on Monday and see how it compares. The kjam is depressingly slow if you let all the o2 gubbins install. Once you sort that out I find it plenty fast enough to be honest.
