My friend is buying her daughter a PC for xmas. She is also looking for educational/learning games to get her. Can anybody recommend some games for a 5 year old girl in her first year of school. Especially maths and English based.

I know when I was young, I loved 'reader rabbit', peter rabbits garden, and 'where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?'. I think they all ran on 98, and they're probably all far too old now, but if you see them on ebay or something then I'd get them... I think that geography based learning programs are really good - they develop general knowledge, and often have interesting scientific information thrown in, but obviously the child has to read the information. Of course, I don't have anything specific in mind, but I'd watch out for anything like that. (maybe throw them in at the deep end with some software for older children - there might be more variety, and I for one was always bored by the lack of detail and depth in resources designed for younger children (even when I was a 'younger child')).
