EE - are they any good as a network? (Also Credit Check)

I tried to order a phone online from EE's website - a black Galaxy S7 Edge.
All went through ok online but then I got an e-mail asking me to call them. So I did, and they told me the black one wasn't actually in stock, and wouldn't be for weeks so I cancelled the order.

I then decided that since it'll be in a case, I could probably live with a gold one after all so called back up to see if I could reverse the cancellation and/or place a new order. This went ok until they did a credit check which came back as "85", so I'd have to pay an additional "deposit" of £100 which I'd get back after 3 months of being with them.

That seemed weird to me so didn't progress it. According to a friend who works for EE I've since found out that the credit status is pass/fail/refer.
I have never failed a credit check before, so got a bit worried. Had a look on experian/noddle and they're both listed as 999 / excellent (not quite right at the top for noddle, but I have a bit on credit cards this month). Never missed a payment for about 5 years when I changed my bank and forgot to update the DD, so missed one.

My credit cards don't seem to have any dodgy transactions on them... well the only one I use/have used, anyway.

So what's going on?

Spoke to someone else later on asking them to refer it to their credit referrals team but they'd all gone home so she'll apparently call me back on Thursday but now I've decided I probably won't bother, and will just buy a phone outright and stick with 3 payg.

EE / MPD messed me about with credit checking on a £20/m contract.

I got a few credit reports and forwarded them on, spent probably about an hour on the phone combined to both EE and MPD.

In the end I just got a BT 20GB/unlimited/unlimited SIM for £20/m and bought the phone out right.

BT does use EE's network though and I've no complaints there. AFAIK EE has the largest network coverage.

Thanks.
Yeah that's what I thought, but a bunch of people tell me their real coverage (unless you live in a major city) is absolute arse.
On 3 I seem to have 3G (don't have a 4G phone) everywhere I have signal, except for some places up on the Isle of Skye, which I don't tend to visit so often.

Kind of my finding with EE. Where I operate mostly in rural areas then found them disapointing. Data even where I had a good 3G or 4G signal was very variable to say the least. It was as if they were suffering from too many users? Delays loading pages and time outs were all to common. Calling anyone was mostly fine. I ended up sticking with Vodafone who are far from perfect but work pretty well where I live and work (rural).

Ee have been brilliant for me most of the time but on occasion I do have some terrible coverage. I had the same with Vodafone and o2 in past too so I figure it's to be expected.

In some areas the 4g has been crazy fast though. Very impressive

All depends where you live. It's a bit of a lottery and think trying a payg sim or two where you spend most of your time will give you an idea how the various networks perform.

You'll have 2 credit checks from them in close succession showing on your file now which could be enough for them to decide you're a risk.
There's no point in going off what the other credit check sites are telling you as EE will use their own formulas, all the other sites can do is to let you see if there's anything obviously wrong.

EE customer service is probably the worst I have ever delt with.
Rude, mis-informed & not a clue on how to provide good customer service.

I would never use them personally, but unfortunatly we have them for the business mobiles at work & we have to deal with them.

In terms of network coverage, I'd say they are similar to other companies.

As a network they are great. They are by far the fastest and have by far the best coverage.

However, similar to Virgin Media in some respects, their customer support is totally shocking. Like really badly terrible. You can call 3 times in a row and get 3 different answers. Once you have it and it's working though it's all good :)

I'm with an offshoot of EE (life mobile) so no 4g

I was very surprised that I got an Indian annoying call centre calling 3 to leave but to transfer my number to life a really helpful UK based lady on the phone

It is owned by EE as well as using their network

Also speeds are better where I live and cheaper.. Waaaaay cheaper

I'm surprised that people are saying EE have bad customer service, the handful of times I've needed to use them they have been polite and helpful.

I agree the CS is a bit hit and miss mainly for me with usual issues with being outsourced abroad. The complaints handling has been excellent though and is quick & UK based. I suppose my need to use the latter (twice) says something about the former.

When I signed up to EE last September I had some bizarre message about my credit check having failed despite already being issued with the sim cards and a welcome pack. When I queried this I was told something even more bizarre - apparently that letter was intended for someone else  and they weren't sure how it came to me instead

I never heard back after that.

The few times I've had to use customer services they've been pretty rubbish tbh and I get the same speeds/connectivity I had with Three which was frankly a much better contract (£18 a month, 600 mins, unlimited data). I'll be switching back to Three in August when this contract is up for all 3 lines.

I was a new customer to EE in August 2014, they messed up and sent to two mobiles, billed me for two accounts etc. I called up and explained the problem, they got the extra phone lifted the next day and cancelled the second account - then gave me 3 months free. I can't really complain about the customer services, just the initial screw up on setting me up.

Coverage is better in my area (central Scotland) than O2 which the wife is on, frequently I get a signal and she doesn't and I'm far more likely to have decent data rates than her especially out of town.

Due my upgrade next month, no idea what to go for though. My S4 battery is showing it's age but I still like the phone..

Logical choice would be the S7, it's a stunning phone :)

Unless you want to try rooting/custom ROMs in the future, other than that I fully agree that it's a very nice bit of kit (And it's waterproof) :)

Back on topic though, EE were an average network at best when I used them. Fine as long as you don't need to contact them as once you get them on the phone they are not the best, when I was cancelling my account it toom numerous phone calls and even then I never got an unlock code for my phone despite asking them.

Still though, they have decent phones on cheap contracts so I suppose you get what you pay for :)
