Hey,

Well EE have been absolutely terrible and are throttling my connection. I am getting around 150kb/s down! Where I live there is no cable/Virgin or anything like this. The only option for me is old fashioned DSL. I have heard great things about Xilo and was wondering if anyone has any experience of them?

About the most I can expect for my phone line is 5mbps down (don't laugh please) and if I could get a unmetered, stable connection at that speed I would be happy. For this Xilo are charging £12.49 plus VAT a month

Thanks

According to that I am 1.96km from the Bolton Exchange

'You are approximately 1.96km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!'

Post router stats & run the BT speed test. Grab IP profile info.

I was using the free one from EE. I have an old Netgear one but I think its packed in so I would need to buy a router probably. Speed test gives 1.5mb down and 0.96mb up and around 40ms ping. The IP profile for my line is 1.7mb

The thing is I was previously with Tiscali and it was never this bad. I was getting around 4mb down with them and it was more stable. I have phoned EE and got them to release me from the contract early due to constant disconnects and terrible performance.

This is your exchange: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LCBOL

Tiscali was fine for you because the LLU package is avaliable at your exchange. EE borrows BT's equipment, and depending on the deal between them, EE could be given pretty low priority hence the low speed and reliability you're getting. At that distance you should be getting 5mb+.

Be and Sky has LLU at your exchange, have you considered them?

I'm on the exact same exchange in Bolton. The best ADSL I had was with bethere. I've had sky fibre optic for 1 year which has been great but recently switched to plusnet fibre unlimited.

A better router might improve the issue. Sync speed is probably holding you back.

You should connect the router to the BT test socket & post the stats.

Thanks for the replies, as you can probably tell I am clueless when it comes to networking =)

How are you finding Plusnet?

Nope haven't considered BE, I am not sure who to go with really I just know I need to change. So let me get this straight, not all ISPs have LLU at Bolton exchange, I need to be targetting one who does? I will have a look at BE

Bare in mind ADSL vs Fibre is a completely different experience, even if it's from the same ISP :p. So his speed and reliability with Plusnet's fibre will be different from yours if you was with Plusnet ADSL.

Pretty much yes, not all ISPs have a LLU presence in every exchange, hence why it's best to target those that do. Seeing as you already have someone who used Be broadband on the same exchange and found the service to be very good, I would be tempted to pick them.

As KIA said though, it may be best to connect to the test socket to see if there are any interferences within your own home as it will ignore any extention phone lines. Also posting router stats would give us a better picture of what speed you should be getting (you can do this by logging into the router page). You should see ADSL speed, Line attentuation, SN margin, etc.

My modem is plugged into the test socket and I have removed all extensions previously when trying to rule out possible causes.

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 5.8 dB 15.7 dB
Line Attenuation 29.1 dB 47.0 dB

Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Upstream 1119 (Kbps.)
Downstream 1931 (Kbps.)

Indicator Name Near End Indicator Far End Indicator
Output Power 12.8 dBm 0.0 dBm
Fast Path FEC Correction 0 0
Interleaved Path FEC Correction NA NA
Fast Path CRC Error 1917 1946
Interleaved Path CRC Error NA NA
Loss of Signal Defect 0 0
Fast Path HEC Error STR 1178 2397
Interleaved Path HEC Error NA NA
Error Seconds 1038 1075

Am looking at BE now

That's a pretty high noise margin, if it was lower then you should be seeing better download speeds. Upload is fine on the other hand.

Be dont exist anymore as its sky BB, Be/O2 was bought by sky earlier this year & think the deal has not long been finalized. Sky are ok and atleast you do get UK support.

What is happening to BE and is this continuing?

Good news. The BE brand continues to exist and for now you’ll continue to be supported in exactly the same way as you are today. Sky have changed the registered name and address of the company, but that’s official stuff. So carry on using the (same) ways to get in contact with us. You’ll also be interested to know that Sky’s also looking to run a ‘Meet the MD’ Forum session and host a BE Pub Night so they can hear for themselves what you think about BE Broadband.

Looks like BE gets to stay as BE. But who knows what Sky will decide to do to them in the future.

Have you looked at Aquiss? They seem pretty good too. I was looking at going to Xilo from BE but have read quite a few things on below par support.

As it is BE LLU enabled, You may want to look at the 02/BE LLU providers such as Aquiss, Goscomb, BE (Not sure how long they will last), Vivaciti, AAISP (Expensive).

It states on Sam knows that some parts are Fiber enabled. Have you looked into that?
