eee pc for films

"portable videoplayer with low storage and no DVD drive"

i want an EEE, but there are a number of hurdles to overcome in using it for that purpose.

It has VGA out does it not? Storage wouldn't be a problem for me :)
Would the unit itself cope with 720p?

if you are just going to output it to a screen anyway, what it the point in having it so small, might as well get a cheap Acer 15"/17"

Because I'll still be able to carry it around when it isn't plugged in.

that's a bit like buying a slim DVD player so you can carry that around. You can carry 15" lappys around, people have been doing it for years!

if the primary function is to play films, get a cheap 15/17". If the primary function is something light to carry around, browse the net, other basic stuff, with good bat life, get the EEE.

I've got a fifteen inch laptop and it's not good for carrying round, I think the eee would make an excellent video player. That's why I asked the original question. It may not be it's primary function, if it was you could buy an Archos or something.

With the eee you've got real flexibility.

I'd rather carry around a 10" laptop than a 15" laptop. It would also be nice if said 10" would cope with 720p (or more) movies. It isn't a be-all and end-all thing but it's nice to know what it can do.

I already have a 15" laptop. This would just mean I can play games and watch movies at the same time, and have the freedom of going walkies if I chose to.

It seems the 900 is good enough, what about the 701?

The eeepc 901 with the intel atom processors are coming out in July.

These should improve battery life but I think the performance is a little lower then the 900s, you'll need to find some benchmarks to check tho
