On the way back from my girlfriends house along my private dual carriage way, following a Kia Picanto, overtaking two lorries, and lots of school children :p @ 80-85 mph in my dads car :( ....And POP.

Cue me wondering what the hell is going on... I come off at the next junction to find a chip on the left hand side of the windscreen, with a 16 inch crack

What do i do now? is it just up to me to get it replaced? or can that be done through insurance (without losing ncb)? Not sure how much it is going to cost to replace :(

tom

Call up insurers who will tell you to call the glass company they are associated with. There is usually an excess for windscreen damage, around £50-75 depending on insurer and no you will not lose your NCB. You will have to do the calling and make the arrangements for someone to visit you to replace/repair your windscreen.

My windscreen got a chip on it a couple of years ago, when I put the heater on in the cold a crack spread accross the screen in a few minutes. My insurance deal was £60 and no loss of NCB. I asked at autoglass how much without insurance and it was just short of £330.

ah great.. will have to check when i go into work tommorow. This will teach me for not using my own car :(

If you were driving the car using DOC cover on your own insurance then you are probably not covered, but if you are a named driver on a comprehensive policy that should be fine. Irrespective your dad should be able to make a claim, and you could just pay him the excess.

Cracked/chipped windscreens are just a part of life I'm afraid, nothing you can really do to avoid them.

Aye, I've not heard of TPF&T policies that provide glass cover.

I raise your cracked windscreen, try going past a lorry on the M40 doing and the passenger front window explodes. Something obviously hit it. I had glass my lap, and tiny pieces had gone everywhere in my face and on my hands.

I had to pay for that, £230.

My brothers car now has a crack that started off as about 4 inches long but he left it an its at about 11/12 inches now travellng up the windscreen :p I guess he is just waiting for it to shatter

He is a fool then, what happens if he hits an inperfection in the road and its the last straw for the window, and it shatters, possibly getting bits of glass in his eyes, is he going to be able to keep control of the car?

I raise you, I've had that happen but on the drivers side, at 5 in the morning, pitch black and it was -5 outside :p

I've also been the passenger when a phesant hit the windscreen on my side at 80mph. Glass everywhere, but it stayed intacted :)

Had similar a few years ago. Was on back roads in the Cinq going around a left hander with a big earth bank on the inside making it quite narrow and pretty blind. Saw a car coming the other way and instinctively moved a little further left to keep away from it then there was a big bang, I was covered in glass and the end of my passenger door mirror was sitting on the seat. Stopped the car and walked back to see what had happened and there was a cluster of those black/white reflective bollards right on the apex of the corner. Obviously they got hit quite often as the hole they are supposed to be in was big enough for there to be three in there and even then they were so loose they were hanging out into the road.

A few seconds later they were in the middle of the field out of harms way ;)

I was still finding bits of glass in that car right up until I got rid of it last month.

Windcsreens dont shatter anymore.

In fact When mine was cracked (about 18 inches) both my insurance company and RAC windscreens told me it was perfectly safe to drive the 25 miles on the motorway to their nearest depo.

Yep, we drove 200 miles after half the windsreen was caved in wth the phesant. RAC said it would be fine.

can't your dad just say he was driving, they are hardly going to check
