Effect of ultra cheap RAM on o/c attempt

I just bought a sort of "halfway" motherboard so I could get a core2 6300 and keep my AGP card for now, I got an asrock 775 dual vsta. I was never expecting miracle overclocks with that board.

To tide me over I paid a grand total of £25 for 1GB of RAM from ebay....some cheap brand, "Nanya" I believe it was. It is apparently PC2-4300 (266Mhz) according to CPU-Z.

Anyway, I can't get the thing to post past 325MHz FSB. Is it the RAM or the board? I might be asking a very obvious question here, but I don't think cheap RAM has limited me that much in the past.

Am I right in thinking that if I want to do my "temporary" overclock of 340Mhz FSB (which the board is limited to) then I need to buy some PC2-5400 memory for its 166Mhz rating?

Thanks

Well getting pc2-4200 to 650mhz (325) is pretty damn good going. It's running just shy of pc2-5300 speeds.

Changing your current stuff to pc2-5300 may get you to 340, but is it worth it for the chance that it might get only another ~100mhz out of your e6300?

You're right. I ordered the E6300 before I was aware of the E4300 with its x9 multiplier :(

Oh well, I take it there is no "unlocker" to get that board past 340? I will just have to wait until I can afford the DS3. Thanks for your reply.

Nope no unlocker. It's a chipset limitation.

But you'll be glad to have the e6300 when you get your DS3 and some decent RAM.
