Recently published were details of the average annual salary of football clubs around the world, as of last summer. The following link reproduces some of that information:

Here

I took the Scottish data and created a quick spreadsheet (major exam procrastination), to show how points and salary compare. The average for points and salary were taken disregarding outliers (i.e. highest and lowest) and the difference between the two is shown as efficiency, whereby a positive number is overacheiving and negative, obviously underacheiving.

Thought it might be an interesting thread if fans of different leagues could do the same. It might also be possible, if someone with better knowledge of statistics than me, can come up with a method of comparing European leagues performance in European competition compared to salary (sorry England, you're going to lose there). Cup competitions obviously, would take a weighting dependent on what round was acheived.

Obviously, this doesn't include domestic cup competitions, or a number of factors so it isn't definitive. I'm sure we all agree however, that the league is generally the best marker as to a teams ability.

Actually, since I just posted this, I can think of a more accurate way of doing this. Since in the Scottish league there are a maximum of 114 points to play for, it would be better to compare points total to that, rather than the league mean.

Still, I'm hoping this can become a community idea. Hopefully we can get some other ideas how to improve this method!
