After loaning an electricity cost analysis plug(kw/h meter) I found the 3 year old Dell laptop supply (19.5V/80W) has a 60% power factor,
so I concluded this means it is using nearly 50% more electricity than a better designed supply would.

Are there any good 3rd party supplies available with better Power Factor Correction / pfc ?

[ I leave the laptop plugged in all the time, in standby at night, and usually with an old battery installed and only put in the newer battery if I need to be mobile with autonomy.
OK the laptop only has a significant consumption when I am using it, but if it were economic I would consider upgrading.
A couple of articles on this one two
active pfc vs passive is the more expensive/efficient solution
meeting standard IEC 61000-3-2 class D specification seems a requirement
