the silly autofocus made getting this shot so hard (one in about 30 AFs actually focussed on the right thing).

there's been no post processing.

Peace of grass in front of the leaf is distracting. Closer framing would be better.

I agree with Zheka with regards to that crop. Shame they arn't quite in focus. What are they? I love the perfect pattern they make.

they're eggs of some sort. probably for a caterchipilliar or some sort.

if i had a proper camera with MF then they would be in focus, but sadly AF compacts aren't exactly precise.

With regards to AF, are you able to just use a central focus point on your camera? If so, probably should use this to focus on the point, keep shutter half down and recompose.

If not, trial and error, just like you had to!!

i was using the central focus point! but the focus mechanism is mounted some 3cm away from the centre of the lens, and when the subject is only 4cm away from the front of the lens it was quite hard.

i did try holding the right zoom level once the right focus had been found, but the wind started blowing so i couldn't get it.

no, those are white, and the termites leave them in the termite nest. not on some random "foot-off-the-ground" leaf
