Hi
So I am thinking about getting either a PC or a laptop, I am not so sure how "strong" today's laptops are, can they be used 24/7? say for downloads and such things?
I am not into gaming at all (Well I got a console which is more than enough for me), more surfing the net, some dreamweaver/photoshop etc... watching episodes/dvds and stuff like that.

I can't efford both so need to choose, a laptop or a PC... honestly I want to get a laptop more than a PC, I am just not sure if It will handle everything OK as a main computer?

Thanks!

If your just using it for general use then either would suit, but you get more for your money with a PC so you could get a decent graphics card. If you need space I'd say get the laptop but if it's not much of an issue get a laptop, though I'd recommend a Dell Vostro in that case.

Sounds like a laptop is definately the best option.

I used to have a desktop and laptop (along with various other servers and crunchers) and as I used the laptop for school work during the day but then worked on the desktop in the evenings, I got fed up of syncronising things between them and found myself wishing that I just had a laptop that would do everything. The reason I used to have the desktop was that the laptop wasn't quite quick enough for games, and didn't have a big enough hard disk for everything.

Nearly a year ago now I sold the desktop and all the other machines and replaced them with a single Vostro 1500. I haven't looked back. It's quick, small, has plenty of storage, and I don't have to syncronise things.

What I'm getting at is that even if you could afford both a desktop and laptop, I don't see the point when todays laptops can do anything a desktop can - and you don't even want to game on it.

Even if you don't think you need the portability of a laptop, if you get one you'll find it really useful. And Vostro 1500s start at silly cheap prices too!

Hope this helps,
Mr. Brightside :)

A few years ago you would sacrifice a lot by choosing a laptop over a desktop system, I have both and find myself using the laptop nearly all of the time, and just use the desktop for music and games at home.

I do everything on my laptop, watch movies, music, downloads, its actually faster than my AMD x2 system on things like photoshop etc.

I've upgraded the RAM in it and getting a faster drive tomorrow for it too, apart from the slightly weak graphics in it I much prefer it, just a lot more convenient, I take it on holiday with me to download photos to and for using if I have some spare time.

Personally I am contemplating going the console route, setting up a NAS to hold stuff at home and then get rid of the main system.

Obviously a good laptop will be more expensive than a desktop system but its worth it :)
