Hi there,
A painter and decorator is going to wallpaper the whole house (3 bed semi with large rooms and a large hallway, stairs come landing).
He is turning up to do the whole stripping and will wallpaper two bedrooms, after that I’m getting a plasterer to skim the lounge ceiling and a couple of walls, the dining room and kitchen ceilings and if necessary skim any horrors the painter uncovers when he strips the walls. Then the painter and decorator will then return to finish off the jobs.
I’ve stripped a part of the wallpaper below the window on the stairs and done a bit of plaster repair where I could see a depression where previous new windows had been installed and instead of levelling the wall had put paper on the top. The wall had lining paper then flat backed vinyl paper which I could see had been emulsioned on at least two occasions. The paper was raised like Anaglypta as such I quite like it but it has been in the wars.
Could someone please advise me what is the best replacement type of paper. We don’t have any children so there won’t be any sticky fingers etc but I’m a bit clumsy and I expect the walls will get the occasional bang from a suitcase etc.
The wife and I took a visit to a local wallpaper shop on Saturday and brought home some samples. Initially we had thought of buying reasonably cheap wallpaper for the hall, stairs come landing we need 10 rolls. The type we saw was cream paper, good light resistance and it was “paintable”.
Since removing the very thick layers of paper on the stairs and doing some filling I can see that the walls appear flat and in good condition but there are hair line cracks in the plaster (similar to land boundaries on a map). Hopefully it won’t require the services of the plasterer.
We could go for Anaglypta and have it emulsioned that way it could get a new lease of life if it gets scuffed.
We did see some nice papers which we shall choose for the lounge which were thick but cost three times more than the Anaglypta.
Does emulsion have good light resistance or does it fade? Is Anaglypta reasonably robust? Or do you think I’d be better off with the paintable cream vinyl paper?
Thanx
