I'm having issues with ejecting USB HD and flash sticks. It used to work about 3 months ago.

All the drives are greyed out, or missing in the USB stick icon in the right side of the taskbar.

Any solutions?

If you are on Windows 10 or above then ejecting any USB storage is an old habit and does not need to be done.

I still do it on my USB drives, especially backup ones. Some external drives, usually enclosures, have a light that I wait for to go out after ejecting the disk, to help guarantee the safety of my data.

Usuually shows up for me on most devices, i always use the option whenever available, takes a second and just makes me feel better rather than yanking it out just like that.

By default all USB drives on Windows use write-caching so you can unplug them with no corruption etc. Even MS updating their statement post-Windows 10 regarding USB drives.

I'm too set in my ways to do that, especially when it comes to backups. Anyway, since when did anybody trust what Microsoft says?

Haven’t used the eject button since Windows XP and even then I’ve only used it once. Have pulled out drives many thousands of times in those 20yrs+ with every version of Windows from XP onwards and haven’t lost a single file to corruption yet whether that’s been 3.5”, 2.5”, SSDs, USB sticks or even SATA drives that have been set to hot swappable.

As long as you don’t pull out drives while actively writing manually the chances of corruption should be extremely tiny.
