Simple question, can these be used as replacement ram heatsinks and cool passively without any water cooling.

Yeah, I don't see why not. They use thermal pads anyway.

Does ram even need heatspreaders? Samsung green being an example, theese clocked pretty nicely on high volts and were heatspreader free.

Funnily enough I've read a lot around the net which pretty much comes to the conclusion that you don't. The change is purely driven by aesthetics so providing the existing heatsinks come off ok I'll either leave the ram bare or fit the modules for a nice "clean" look.
