So I have an EK full cover waterblock for my Fury X, and the instructions say to apply thermal paste and pads, mount the block and then remove the block again to check for even contact.

Surely this is bad for the thermal paste as when attaching the block again there will be air bubbles? Even though it doesn't say it, I assume then I would need to clean the paste and reapply?

I have had a quick look at the instructions for the EK-FC R9 Fury X water block on the EK shop and yes, it does say do this in step 6.
That does seem odd. I am reading the instructions now to figure out why they say this.

Edit:
They do seem to be implying that you might have to add more pads over the originals to increase the thickness if you see no indication of conact with the block. I hope they have provided extra pads?
It does mean that you will have to apply paste again to the GPU.
I hope someone else who has done this can chime in.

Pretty sure it says that on all their gpu block instructions (I've had many gpu blocks).

As long as you follow their instructions to a tee and use the correct pads on the correct areas (there's usually multiple pads with differing thickness) - you should be kool.

I've never taken a block off to check for contact tbh! - once its done its done. Just take it slow with the instructions.

Thanks for the replies. It does only come with a single piece of thermal pad, which I need to cut to the right size. There doesn't seem to be much spare however. I might just put it on carefully and hope for the best then!

Zoomee is correct. I checked the instructions for my EK R9 290X block and its says the same things as well to check contacts. I must have just fixed it and did not bother to check. Its been about a year and a half now and I have not had any issues. I am sure you will be fine.

I never bothered to check but don't worry about air getting trapped in your thermal paste as once pressure is applied then it'll be pushed out or be so small it'll make no difference.

Just place the block on the card with everything except the paste applied. Then, take back off and inspect the pads. If contact is good, apply paste and refit.

Try the blocks and paste for even contact. To make sure your amount is correct and is spreading correctly so the block has been machined correctly. Also so the pads are making good contact.

Your then supposed to clean away the thermal paste re-apply some new stuff and put the block together. you usually get supplied with enough for a couple of applications.

Usually I just fit the pads, check for contact and fit the paste. Only time ive checked it is to make sure I get the best method that was about it. Which is line about 4-5mm from the ends from one side to the other on the GPU die. X method that EK say is way too much.

Thanks. Looks like that's the best way then, to apply the pads and not the paste, check for good contact, then apply the paste.
