I don't think there is a certain class or type that is best. Simply choose the character YOU want to make, I think your overall gameplay experience will increase in that you can get behind the character more.

I have NEVER played with a preset class.

Create your own with the choices YOU like. Much better :) I had a guy who was capable at the heaviest of melee combat but also skilled at sneaking around quite nicely :)

Due to the levelling system, don't pick major skills that will level up a lot. Levelling up too fast is bad, you need to increase minor skills to make the most of each level.

I was a tree-elf who was a specialised thief/assasin. Was awsome :P he could pwn with a bow and sword :D

My main skills are the main ones I use Attack, Run, Block etc and I havent run into trouble at level 22 after 50 hours of play. :)

i had a bit of trouble vs mages :( they delt out some uber dmg. But i manaed to get some armor that gave me some amazing magic resists

I actually quite like the leveling system... you get the most powerful stuff later on and the baddies are harder...it gets boring if it becomes easier..saying that the high level spells are insanely powerful

My character was like that too but at one point everything became really hard and I had to turn the difficulty down.
