My wife is revisiting Oblivion (GOTY Edition).

I noticed a thread here about Morrowind mods which prompted me to seach for Oblivion mods.

I found Planet Elder Scrolls site which lists loads and loads.

Which are worthwhile? Which are not? Are they all compatible with GOTY edition?

How do you install/apply them?

Thanks :)

Try that great site for oblivion mods

Download the oblivion mod manager and install your mods to it, you can turn your mods off and on there.

I have

Enhanced weather 1.42

Map marker overhaul 3.8

Qarl texture pack

Raziels crystal equipment

And if you go to the companion mod section, you will see a mod there for a wolf and its cub, she helps you out in battles, and the cub, well just looks cute

Be carefull when mixing mods though, because of compatibility, the ones above work fine though

If you look at the top 100 mod section you will find the mods you need.

You might want to look at OOO - its a large scale overhaul mod for oblivion, that changes an awful lot of stuff, and in my opinion corrects quite a few issues.

It does alter the gameplay quite a bit, but there's always the difficulty slider if things get a bit too tough ;)

These sites and there pointless registration requirements really starts to get annoying... thankgod i got my password right the first time.

FCOM is great but it likely takes far too much time and effort to get installed. It took me freakin' ages. Best method is to find a guide to installing it, download EVERYTHING it says, then go through 1 at a time. Trying to download stuff as you go takes even longer and you can easily mess it up. It would probably be better just going with MMM, OOO or Fran, can't remember what each does individually though to recommend.

I could never get Qarls texture pack working... it just doesn't do anything. Same with the Shivering Isles texture pack.

Oblivion XP is a must have.

Have you tried the mod manager, it takes all the pain out of installing

Official thread time? :p

Wouldn't be a bad idea if we had an OP that would constantly update post 1 with the most commonly used mods by OcUK'ers. I daresay OOO, Francesco's and Oblivion XP would be near, if not at the top of the list.

Playing through Shivering Isles myself now at last. Spent ~65 hours going through the main game a while back, only really got into playin SI now. Loving it :)

I have these:

A lot of the mods I have will have multiple entries in the list on the left. I basically have the following:

Qarl's Texture pack - this is an amazing pack that replaces most of the textures in game. With this Oblivion still looks better than some of the tat released these days.

Illumination Within Revived - lights up windows at night, makes town look brilliant

Unofficial Oblivion Patch - fixes bugs that Bethesda didn't

Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplements - the creater of the above stopped maintaining it, so this is basically an extra set of bug fixes to go on top

Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch - same as above for SI

Bors Bed Rolls - lets you put down a bed roll & sleep anywhere

Natural Environments - makes the environment more realistic and nicer by adding things such as bugs flying around, different typed of vegetation, natural weather and habitats

Quest Award Leveller - one problem I found with Oblivion is you can do pretty much any quest at any level and the reward you receive is based on your level at the time. This mod will level up your quest rewards so they will always be decent/useful.

Darnified - this is a must for anyone. Improves the overal GUI

Unofficial official mods patch - this patches the DLC

Fast Exit - if you're running Windows 7 / Vista Oblivion will exit very slowly and often crash on exit. Use this to fix that.

Reneers Guard Overhaul - I did have this for ages, it's a really good mod that overhauls the whole guard system. You'll find if you steal something, kill someone or trespass in game a guard will quite often magically appear out of nowhere to arrest you. This mod makes it so, for example: guards will run if you have almost killed them, you can bribe guards to leave their post, if you manage to kill the guard that caught you then nobody will ever know about your crime ;) and of course if you commit a crime when no guards are around then you don't get caught. There are a few other changes that you can read on tesnexus. Only reason I stopped using it is because it crashed the end game scene for me for some reason.

A lot of the mods I use are personal preference of course, probably best if you have a look through the top 100 at http://tesnexus.com/

I could never get Qarls texture pack working... it just doesn't do anything. Same with the Shivering Isles texture pack.

That would be to do with archive invalidation, i.e. you need to tell Oblivion to use the replacement textures rather than the original. Qarl's setup guide takes you through getting round this.

Of course i have the mod manager, it wouldn't even be possible otherwise. Its a pain to install no matter what way you look at it. Things installing in the correct order or you might overwrite the wrong thing. Not including certain files from certain mods. An exact load order or things might conflict and go screwy. Wrye Python needing to be installed for whatever it did. Needing to create a Bashed Patch to help compatability.

I've been there and done that, believe me. It never seemed to work for whatever reason. Maybe i'll try it again from scratch but i've followed the install guides for texture packs to the letter and got no results every time.

(plus Oblivion.esm, Francesco's Levelled Creatures-Items Mod.esm and Francesco's Optional New Items Add-On.esm at the top)

It took me 3 days to get all my mods working in Oblivion... Whenever it went wrong, restoring the original directory back to the way it was took ages :( Really frustrating, but it improves the game no end. :)

Urgh, this is all a bit overwhelming!

I don't particularly want to change the game play, just fix any bugs (I see there are patches - although are these not fixed in GOTY edition?) and make the graphics more up to date.

What is MMO and OOO? Doesn't mean nothing to me!

I'm surprised they haven't released an installer for Fcom yet, I thought they planned that ages ago when I played.

If your very new to Oblivion then I'd avoid some of the big mods at first, I guess it depends on what type of gamer you are. Things like Fcom and OOO make the game a lot more unforgiving and harder in many areas, some dungeons you wont be able to enter without getting your ass kicked. (Unless you enjoy glitching behind a rock hitting a enemy for 10 minutes :D)

Last time I modded it the Unofficial patches werent used anymore as they were causing some conflicts in the big mods.

Heres a good PCgamer article: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/07/16/ten-essential-oblivion-mods/

The problem is issues with compatibility, you will need to install patches etc for then to work together. I suggest you skipped through it and cherry pick one or two.

Wish there was an easy answer, getting a fully modded Oblivion experience is no easy task and requires a few hours of reading on the Oblivion mod forums to get a idea of what do to, involves doing merged patchs etc with tools which would be a nightmare for anyone that isn't a frequent PC user.

thats what most mods do, improve the graphics, etc go to the link in my first post.
If you bought the game on Steam? it should be the latest version, if not just update if needed,

@Evilsod: When was the last time you did a bashed/merged patch, I see it on your list but isn't at the end of the load order, it should always be at the very bottom. Have you tried looking at the load order help page on the Fcom site?. (Bare in mind I haven't modded Oblivion in ages, might of changed)

Modding can be a bit of a nightmare, ive only been into it for a few weeks myself, but like lokis said if you spend a bit of time on the mod sites and with a bit of trial and error you should grasp it ok.
