Right, after finding out how high our gas bills are I've decided to get an electric hob and am after something under £200, preferably as cheap as possible but something that will last.

Any help much appreciated as I've never purchased one before.

Thank you.

Much love.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Some interesting developments have occurred since I started this threat, personally speaking.

Last week I spoke to my energy company who have say that we are spending £112 a month on Gas for the last 6 months (accurate reading)...

I am almost livid about this as we have had the central heating OFF since March / April time so for at least 3 of those months we central heating hasn't even been on for those £112 Gas bills per month.

Anyway, yesterday we noticed the boiler was leaking and have just had a plumber come out to inspect it and he says that we need a new boiler. He has told us we cannot use it and that a fire could even have started with the water and electrics.

The repairs to the boiler out weight the cost of getting a new one.

I think we've found out the culprit for our high bills and upon further reading after starting this thread I have found out that gas hobs are actually cheaper than electric ones.

We each have a shower a day and wash the pots up twice / sometimes three times a day which doesn't take long to fill the sink up so £112 p/m is just ridiculous.

Hopefully with a new boiler the prices will be much lower.

With no central heating on and just using the gas oven and hobs, £50 on a payg meter lasts us over 2 months. So I'd say it's definitely down to the boiler leak.

And that it's about 15 years old now I reckon... an Ideal Combi and we've had problems with it since moving here (2009)... the amount of times we've had to call the letting agent to get it sorted, even the guy that runs it says the LL would have been better off buying a new boiler before now.

Also, thinking about it and having read the replies yeah, I should be thankful for a gas hob. Being able to have instant heat and what not is great. I just rushed in thinking that an electric hob would save us a lot on our bills since we do a lot of cooking with the hob.

Looks like, as I've said, that it's the boiler that is to blame.

Always electric fan assisted Oven. I think we can say gas hon or high end induction hob these days. But it has to be very high end. The Low end have so few heat settings.

How bad was the leak, surprised you couldn't smell it.

It was a water leak. But I just think that the general condition of the boiler has caused the massive bills.

So how did you use so much gas?

I don't know for sure. I'm not much of a plumber / DIY man and fix computers for a living so all that kind of stuff is out of my field anyway.

The fact is though, since moving here in 2009 we've been very happy with everything bar the boiler and the heating of the property.

We've had British Gas out in the first year quite a number of times, a sufficient amount of times to even prompt the letting agent to remark (when I saw him a couple of months ago) that the LL would be better off just replacing the boiler.

I don't think the boiler has been serviced during our time here, we had a Gas Safety Check in January this year but that's not the same as a service is it?

As well as this water leak we've had to manually adjust the pressure on the boiler ( the tap connected to the boiler pipes ) which we shouldn't have to be doing as Tenants.

I don't know the exact age of the boiler but I suspect it's knocking on around 15 years now, maybe longer. It makes weird rattling and knocking noises from time to time as well.

The letting agent is good to us generally, it's just that the LL is a pain to get hold of, but having said that his daughter is now in charge so the letting agent should be able to get in touch with her a lot easier.

Out of curiosity here, would you have any comeback on the landlord, considering it was his neglect that has caused you to have such high bills, and you say you've already reported many problems with it?

Perhaps as a good will gesture more than anything, I definitely feel that the boiler has caused our bills to rise exponentially in the past few months so I will take it up with him once we've got a new boiler installed.

Have you checked what tarrif on. You post makes it sound like you haven't got a clue so don't look at these things. If not I apologize. Just comes across that way.
You need to find out where the gas is going, or change to a non rip off tarrif. One or the other. No way you should be using that amount with no heating.

If nothing else, write down the matter reading every hour when ever possible and see if it's spiking, or constant use. That could point you in the right direction.

Domestic Standard. I think I'll be doing that with the meter tariff from now on.

Well, I've just read that under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 it states:

The landlord is responsible to maintain installations for the supply of:

Water

Gas (servicing once a year by a registered CORGI gas fitter)

Electricity

Sanitation

Space heating and heating water

- We haven't once had the boiler serviced since residing here from October 2009. I think the letting agent has some explaining to do.

What does a Boiler Service entail then guys? Duration of work, work involved etc.?

I took this upon the letting agent who replied back that a Gas Safety Certificate was the service... a lad came out in January and was here for 5 minutes maximum, checked a few things, turned hobs on, checked the boiler here and there and was gone...

That's not the same as a service is it?

New boiler is being fitted at 9am on Saturday, guy came today to survey and I asked him if the new boiler would be A rated and he said it would... hope he wasn't just bs'ing me.

The letting agent said that it will be a replacement for the one we have currently but a newer model.

The one we have is an Ideal Isar which the guy said used to be rubbish but that Ideal have now "bucked their ideas up"

As long as it's A rated I should be happy anyway, shouldn't I?

Yeah it's had a good innings I guess. The new boiler will also be Ideal but a new model obviously. In the news today SSE (who I am with) are hiking their energy prices up by 9 percent as of the 15th October!

Well I have from Saturday until then to see how the new boiler compares to the old one
