I'm looking at replacing my traditional up and over garage door with an electric roller. I've checked that I have adequate space inside the garage.

There seem to be a few distributors online - does anyone have a recommendation of a good supplier and fitter?

Just doing a search on this and this was the most recent thread! I'm just looking now myself to replace mine. Any recommendations?

i'm looking at getting mine replaced sometime this year, funds permitting.

Believe the Hormann sectional ones are the ones to go for, pricey though !

I recently got mine done by Essati doors. It's a decent result I think and they seemed competitively priced. They get you on the extras like choosing your colour and getting a slightly better remote control so the advertised very low prices need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

what kind of guarantee can you get on the motors and mechanism in the Hormann systems ? Have several older neighbours who have had these installed and they have lasted ~5 years before becoming unreliable and they have then been met with a >1K bill to fix them (motors, pulleys/guidance wheels).
Possibly they have failed to fulfill regular lubrication requirements, I am not sure, but they seem, very much, to be built to cost.
Possibly poor installation by original contractor is partly responsible with play or misalignment of the guidance rails putting undue stress on parts.

Is a maintenance contract of some sort esssential ?
Nonetheless speaking to them, ownership is a miserable/expensive experience.

my parents had a Hormann fitted by http://www.thamesgaragedoors.com/ about five years ago. not had any problems, routine maintenance is just oiling the spring once a year (the fitters came and did it the first year).

the product is great (no problems so far) and although you're probably out of their catchment area the guys that came and fitted it were great.

Our garage has a Garador sectional door. Thankfully the previous owners fitted it as it's pretty wide, so doubt it was cheap! Works nicely but doesn't get that much use as we use the side door.

I need to phone my company and enquire in more detail about regular maintenance actually - thanks for reminding me! I can imagine that replacing motors etc is a lot more expensive than fitting in the first place due to having a captive audience.

Is your door in bad shape? You can get a motor for an up and over. My parents had one fitted to their existing door about 15 years ago and it's never gone wrong.

I work on garage doors day in day out

Horman doors are very nice when they work but when something goes wrong you be paying through the nose as most of the parts you only can get through Horman so prices shoot up

Roller shutters can look just as nice as you can get any colour even wood grain if you prefer and most parts are usually standard so most garage door firms will have spares I've just replaced a motor today on 1 which only cost the customer 240 quid where as Horman could cost 4x as much

I am looking for replace my up and over double garage door soon with one that includes a pedestrian door (no other access to garage) Brutal Biff you maybe able to help here. What is the best style (sectional, roller etc) to go for when speccing a garage door with pedestrian access?

What your asking is a wicked gate not ideal for a domestic roller but there is another way

With rollers you can have the handwind go to the outside with knuckle joints accessed through a hole through the wall with a lock

Also you can have a ups in the event of a power cut

As for an up and over you can have a wicked gate fitted with an interlock switch preventing the whole door lifting up with the wicked gate fitted

Whereabouts are you

Is there any particular brand of roller door you'd recommend? Are they all as secure as each other?
