Just a quick question to those folks who fold 24/7 with a q6600

How much electric do you use or how much extra per month do you pay?

Got 2 machines going here and i've used over 150kw in 2 weeks at 9.5p per kw thats about £30 per month.
Does this sound normal?

A Q6600 @ 3.5ghz running 24/7 costs about £4-£5 a week.

So upto £20 a month.

Thankfully I've a card meter, so I don't get hit with the bill every quarter.

Running computers 24/7 does cost a fair bit.
I run lots of them at home running various DC clients.

The q6600 is the DC'ers chip of choice at the moment.
I run them headless.
They use about 4 to 5 units a day depending on the overclock.
15 quid a month sounds about right.

I dont know much about folding other than it can help science and hopefully result in cures for diseases.

But do all you guys do this just out of goodness of your hearts or is there some kind of financial benefit for you?

It just seems to me that it would cost a fortune on leccy and i suppose if your out at work all day with your cpu running at 100% there is always a slight fire risk in your homes.

No financial benefit to us.
Major financial benefit to the research science boffins (aka testing for free)

Reason for doing it vary.

Intrest in 'the science'
For the good of humanity
Personal connection to a friend/family member who has one of these illness
Friendly compertition
Being a member (having friends) within an active IT based community
Addiction / Habbit
The pc in my office are on anyway - might as well use the spair cycles.
Passtime / Hobby
Can afford the 75p a day per machine it costs.
Folding 24/7 costs less that 4h of sli gaming
Maximise your PPD (points per day)

The list goes on - the answers are simular to 'why do you drink' or 'why do you game' except many are less introspective.
For most of us its a different mixture of 4 or 5 of the above
Hope that answer your question

Thanks mate, I wasnt trying to knock it as i think its pretty cool. Was just wondering on peoples motivations for doing it.

Might get this running on my work comps as they are on 24/7 anyhow and are not in constant use.
