I'm going to change some 13A Fused Switched Spur sockets at the weekend and need some help with what wires go where! The layouts on the old and new ones are different so I want to make sure everything goes in the right hole.

The wires I have in the socket are:

2 Reds together
2 Blacks together
1 Red single
1 Black single
2 Earths

The new socket has these connections:

L Out
L In
N In
N Out
Earth

I know where the earth goes but not sure which connection the double/single wires go into.

Cheers

L Out = 1 Red single
L In = 2 Reds together
N in = 2 Blacks together
N Out = 1 Black single
Earth = 2 earths

In short, reds are live, blacks are neutrals.
Think of your all sockets in the room being dasiy chained together (called a ring main) The electric comes in to the socket then goes out to the next one (hence the L in and L out)

The single red & black were probably added as an afterthought and go to another socket somewhere not on the "ring", common these to the relevant L and N terminals

It's a fused spur he is wireing, not a socket. The single red and black will be going to the appliance the fused spur is feeding.
The In connections are from the ring, the Out connections are to the appliance.

Try getting a fork or a knife and sticking it in a mains socket in one of your rooms. Ensure it is nicely jammed in before turning on the switch. Make sure you are holding on to the fork as you turn the power on.

Then you should be good to go!

You will find that most replies to this sort of post are helpful and not generally posted by total **** holes who think that they are amusing.

I'm in need of some more help with my sockets again! The ones I bought before were too big so I've now bought some smaller ones but the backs of the sockets are different. This time they are:

N Load
L Supply
L Load
N Supply
Earth

Is the L/N Load the same as the L/N In/Out (2 wires) with the single wires going to the L/N supply?

Thanks again (stands by for sarcy comments again)

Supply = IN and Load = Out, so:

N Load = Single black
L Supply = 2x Reds
L Load = Single red
N Supply = 2x Blacks
Earth = green and yellow, either both together or in seperate earth terminals.
