 , my mums electricity bill came in today, based over 3 month's its 374.70, we have used 3947kWh's, with british gas are there any other electricity companys that are cheaper as this seem's a lot

my guess is british gas will be one of the most xpensive.

tru

ww.uswitch.com I think thats the URL put the info in and see what the others are like

I dont have enough info on you to do it properly as it needs yer Gas usage etc as well to make a full dual fuel discounted saving.

however it would seem there are way better suppliers for you out there.

based on gas usage being a quid, using yer electric for everything and being 4 epople in a semi detached property

Atlantic Electricty and gas would save you around £400 a year

1) It's not your bill, so don't stress. Unless you're running a cluster in your bedroom, or a recording studio or something :D
2) uswitch

well as you can see there has been a lot of electricity used, so we are definetly going to need a new provider this is ridiculous imo

Have you considered a pay as you go meter? We are with British Gas also and got fed up of the bills so decided to go pay as you go instead.

This way we have no bills and we just charge the meter up as required, some people may see this as extra hastle but meh, we have found you save a lot of electricty this way as your less inclined to waste it.

I guess technically your paying the same but its one less bill to worry about, just a suggestion anyway

Oh we also have a PAYG gas meter too, so thats 2 less bills to drop on the door mat :D

I've just had my first electricity bill at my new address - the estimated bill sent to me was for £368 for five months, I took a meter reading and my actual bill turned out to be £196........

British Gas are i think the most expensive out there, the cost of electricity and Gas is a joke but what can you do, If you have actually used that much thats quite a whack as its summer so lights arent used much. Ours for 3 months in a 2 bed flat was about £80 and 3 months gas through summer has just came in at £15 as we dont use the heating atall through summer as most dont.

There was somehthing on the news ages ago that said payg meters where tariffed much higer than normal meters and that people where paying more for the same amount of fuel.

Is that an actual bill after someone has read the meter or an estimated one? As if estimated provide your own meter readings as it can be on the high side when they estimate it, as had the same when i was with my ex and we provided actual readings and got a hefty reduction.

SCM

That reading is possibly a bit high in the grand scheme of things but its not sky high, works out about 1.8kw/h per hour... a constant draw of 1.8kw , when the electricity companies size substations they work on an average of 2kw per house :) .If the house in question is a busy family house with an electric cooker or shower, then I wouldn't have thought it'd be too far out, tbh

 While this would'nt suprise me, surely they would have some sort of legal obligation to tell us that the price per kwh or however it is measured would be higher on a PAYG meter.

You got me wondering now, will have to check if they have pulled a sly one on us

we do use a electric cooker most night, we have 2 laptops in the house and 2 computers these are use quite a bit there are 4 people in this house

They do, and they're usually higher than normal methods of payment to cover the additional administration costs involved. It's also more difficult to transfer to a supplier other than the Host supplier (at present I don't think you actually can but I could be wrong with that). The problem is that having a card meter is no guarantee of not getting a bill when it comes to the time of getting a reading.

When you buy a card you buy a money value, you don't buy a number of units. Let's say the meter you have is set to 10p a unit plus a bit to cover standing charges, let's use 11p per kWh for the sake of argument.

Provided the actual price per kWh is equal to or less than 11p at the end of the billing period you "shouldn't" have a bill to pay. If the actual price is higher then you will have to cover the difference. This assumes that the meter doesn't automatically deduct from your credit to cover standing charges, then it's slightly different again.

The other thing to remember when buying credit is that you should NEVER buy a £10 card from a guy down the pub, if you've still got a card meter. Each payment is recorded against a particular account. You put in the card and are able to use electricity but no money has been recorded as being received for your account and you end up with a bill at the end of the period. Won't be a problem if you have one of the credit card type arrangements which get's scanned at point of purchase.

I had my electric card meter taken out last year, the charges are far higher than normal. I'm sure the meter is set to take a fixed charge for each time you use the card. So you never get your £5 worth of power using a £5 card

I also used to get the odd bill demanding payment, that used to confuse me,how can you get a bill for monies due when you are using a prepayment card

I'll try & dig up the info i had

seems scottish power looks to be the cheapest for me and the power i use etc, anyone else with scottish power?

WOW your bill was £300 + pound thats how much you used so pay it. Ours is always around 200-250 i find that nroaml to be honest. Also the whole sale price has gone up over the past months due to the price of oil and NG going up get used to it because it will get higher and higher.
