I've just moved into a new house and now have to pay the electricity bill directly :( (I had bills included before).

So I bought one of those plug in energy monitor things, and from initial tests it looks like my PC folding 24/7, with monitors off, costs around 50p - 60p per day. Which is around £200 per year on the current EDF tariff (something my girlfriend definitely does not need to find out about!!!)

I'm looking to switch electricity to British gas dual fuel (I have gas with them) on a websaver tariff which looks slightly better overall, but just thought I'd check if anyone had any recommendations for energy providers which have good rates (London region)?

And also out of interest how much are the rest of you guys paying on electricity for folding, is £200 per year excessive?

my folding is free at the minute - I use a low power passive 8800gs in my work pc
(adds 10p a day to the office bill) the previous 7xxx card used more juice but was only on 10h.
Home rig is doing Rossetta@home (cpu only) it's about 15p for a 12h day.

what are you paying per kWh?

I also worked out that turning the tv/dvd/hiFi/ps2/freeview etc at the wall over night knocked £12 of the bill a month
£150 a year saving for 4 sec at night of my time - easy

use the money saving expert site - they will give you advice on the cheapest option - I am moving over to Scotish Power from Eon. I will only save about £25/year but through a cashback website they are giving me £80 for switching :D

From memory it was just over 10p per kWh, and british gas was just under 10p. Although they all seem to do an initial so many kWh at one rate, and then anything over at a slightly cheaper rate.

That's a good idea, I did notice my PC / monitors were drawing 24w even when turned off, I guess making the the little savings around the house do make a difference when they add up.

Thanks didgemaster there's a lot of other info on there about switching I didn't know about. I've just checked money supermarket as well at it thinks eon is the way to go for me.
