eliminating 'pauses'

I tried only checking 1 CPU, then also stopping bittorrent, but i cant say either made much of a difference. I opened task manager and had around 50 ongoing processes - is that normal? I guess it must be a RAM issue then. Those that are playing it with no pauses - do you have max detail + aa on 1280x1024?

50 processes sounds like quite a lot - might be worth trying to clean up windows a bit. I'm running without having thought about ending any, and I have about 25 with all sorts of little things open here and there, so 50 while gaming is quite a bit.

50 isn't excessive. With a mediaplayer, firefox, av, msn messenger, gmail notifier, ati tool and teamspeak running I currently have 46 processes. Maybe he hasn't disabled the java update process, real update process, adobe update process etc etc.

Anyway 50 processes isn't a lot by any standards and especially so with a dual core system.

u wanna worry about memory usage, not how many you have open. I am currently on a shed so any runnin in my background seriously slows things down.

Certain AV's use less than others, same for MSN, etc.

My computer does EXACTLY the same.

This pausing forced me to buy 2 Gb of ram that didnt help , a multi meter to check psu.. that isnt a problem and also make sure everything is super duper stable.

In my opinion the problem lies with the Nvidia Geforce 7800 card and that game as i have read 2 or 3 other people with identical problems.

I will try a reinstall of windows when i get round to it and ill tell you if that works if it doesnt.. ill try and get hold of an ATI card to see if that gets rid of the problem. But as need for speed most wanted goes its definetly not the ram.. if you run a program called memwatcher while playing the game you will see that the game doesnt use more than 600Mb.

Cheers - looks like it could be that then. The only other racing game I play is TOCA Race Driver 2, and that runs without any pauses at all. Let me know how you get on.

I tried with no AA at all, but no difference whatsoever. I did notice that the pauses happen at the same place on every lap, so I'm guessing it is something to do with loading new data? The pauses in The Movies annoy me mopre though - does anyone else get those, when a new movie is ready for release amongst other times? The whole game pauses and slows for a second or two.

Have you try changing the speed of your ram from 533mhz to 400mhz? You may never know.

i recently upgraded to 2gb of ram and now nfs is super smooth! it helped me so not sure why it didnt do anything for u amps

Might be an idea to do a google for "pci latency tool". I had pause issues with Farcry and a 6800u agp and SB audigy. If i remember correctly the sound card was taking too much of the pci bus. The latency tool was able to reduce this it it improved things allot.

Did you have a similar problem with it then? You have a similar gfx card, so it COULD be just memory I need...... Is anyone having the problems I mentioned with The Movies as well?

For NFSMW try editing the following registry value as it boosts the amount of cache the games uses and makes it ultra smooth.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EA GAMES\Need for Speed Most Wanted\CacheSize

Also read this guide for some other tips:
http://www.tweakguides.com/NFSMW_1.html

That helps.

Can some of the other 7800Gt (7800GTX) user post there average FPS in NSMW.

Use Fraps

Well in my experience of this kind of problem in the past was down to soundcards, at the mo I'm having the same problem caused by my network card. I dont think it has anything to do with ram.

Well mine is locked @ a very solid/constant 30 as I like vsync on because with a 24" TFT it has very noticeable tearing without enabling it.

It shouldnt be syncing a 30FPs even with Vsync on unless ** monitor has a very poor refrewsh rate.. it should sync at ** monitors refress rate.

I was thinking the same so i tryed disabling the sound card but this didnt help.. going to try disabling other bits of hardware.. to be honest it doesnt bother me that much now since i have completed the game but it would be good to find out what it was.

NFSMW seems capped @ 30FPS for me. TFT can do 60Hz tops @ 1920x1200 native. Some games can hit 60FPS most cannot unless vsync is disabled then you get ugly horizontal screen tearing.
