Elite Dangerous (Horizons essential?)

I have read a few comments over the last few months stating that since the launch of horizons AI enemy ships are OP. Not only that but the frequency of NPC attacks on players trying to earn a living from trading has increased ten fold.
Is there a way to mitigate this by purchasing the Horizons DLC? Does this DLC introduce new ships or equipment to help combat the new NPC aggressiveness?

Horizons doesn't change core gameplay. It's only the planet stuff.

Cheers Nasher, this will be one of the first games I pick up when I eventually get my new rig. Not really that keen on the planet based gameplay of Horizons so its good to know its not essential

Remember that its not just Horizons that you are buying, but a season of expansions that add to the core gameplay. We've had Horizons and Engineers so far this season with 2.2 on its way in October. The core game is patched and does get some of the new features for free, but most are only available via the season pass. From what I've seen so far 2.2 is looking excellent and looks like Frontier are starting to address some of the common complaints around the game. The AI is a bit more balanced now than it was at the release of Engineers, it can still be a challenge but it's no longer almost certain death for those of us who aren't brilliant combat pilots

Thanks for the info melchy, I did not know this. Looks like I need to do a bit more research to see what I would be missing out on.

Sorry. I should clarify that season 2 is called "Horizons". So far this season we've had 2.0 - Planetary Landings, 2.1 - Engineers. The 2.2 expansion should be out in October and contains passenger missions (including a new ship), ship launched fighters, npc crew for fighters, extra in game variety to space stations etc.
