Elite dangerous multiplayer options

Would I be right in thinking that the only multiplayer option is to join a server which has all players on it? There's no way to have a set-up with just friends present?

Oh great, that's what I was hoping, but couldn't see anything on the game website.

So one of the players would run a server?

EDIT: Having done some deeper googling based on your answer, I see that the servers run by the game makers allow you to use their own and make one private. Similar to GTA5 I guess. That's perfect. Thanks!
