With the recent release of X4 and Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe Edition currently on sale at £9.59... which one cures the itch I once had for the classic Elite?

I've been following both threads here closely, but still none the wiser on which I should choose.

Well i'm kinda in the same boat as you but i'm more of an X game fan than Elite fan that being said, i'm going for ED: Commander Deluxe Edition over X4: Foundations purely & simply because X4 is so new, if Ego run true to form the next 3 - 6 months will be bug fixing & game patching so it's going to be quite some time before any worthwhile new content comes our way, so personally i'm going to leave X4 alone till maybe March.

This was my thoughts exactly, but what does X4 offer that Elite doesn't and more importantly how do they both compare? I'm eager to pull the trigger as the price is just right at the moment!

I don't see your dilemma really when Elite is only £10 and is fully patched with expansions included, plus if you don't get on with it after a couple of hours you can refund it.

As far as I'm aware X4 offers nothing that ED doesn't, ED is a colossal primarily online space sim & X4 is a wee little offline sandbox for now tho there's online incoming for X4 but it will never ever be the size of ED, so to be fair I don't think you can really compare the 2.

Ive not played much of Elite and havent played any of the X games for many years but I remember having mining bases and production factories aswell as fleets of ships in it. Does Elite allow you to do simular?

Thinking the same thing. When I first looked a few months back it was £40+ so for £9.59 it's a bit of a no brainer. With the latest Horizons update it is supposed to be much better than it was. I've just picked up a T-Flight X Hotas and I'm just in the setting and configuring stage, so not had chance to immerse myself yet.

Can somebody confirm this daft question: the season pass included means that another payment will be needed to continue playing at a later date, if so how long is the pass?

Good question, extremely tempted to buy this now but noticed the high influx of negative feedback on Steam at the moment is putting me off somewhat.

Generally one is for the entire game - however some developers have excluded some DLC from season passes or put out a second one when they consider it "season two". Most are not clear about this at the start on purpose.

You didn't need to purchase the current season pass (Horizons) all it did was give you access to new elements of the game. The next season (4?) is some way off, most likely details revealed around E3.

ED needs more than 2 hours to even get part way through the tutorial so I don't recommend purchasing unless you really want to give it a go.

Given Elite is under a tenner you might as well buy that. I'll maybe try x4 when it's cheaper but for £40 it doesn't look like something that would tempt me away from Elite.

Elite Dangerous is a wierd one.

It's like they did all the donkey work, then stopped before all the fun stuff.

Basically, the game runs great, looks great. It's a huge sandbox with huge potential, but thats it, so basically lacks any real content. Sure you can spend weeks (literally) flying through space to new undiscovered systems to find, basically nothing that desimillar to the previous. The combat missions are limited and clunky, the multiplayer is bad, and clunky.

I actually clocked up quite a few hours on it, just becuase it had me convinced it would get better, id find something I was missing etc, but no.

Honestly Frontier Developments (I think who makes it) should make some kind of mod tools and let people go nuts on it.

Shame really.

Might just hold off on Elite Dangerous I know it's only a tenner but X4 from what I've been reading seems to be patching up really well lately.

This is the problem with the game - that and the controls have you repetitively working through a sequence to do quite basic stuff which kind of is part of Elite but puts me off getting into the game for what there is of it. Despite being a backer and chucking a bit of money at the game, as I got a lot of enjoyment from the original, I've barely played ED.

Never liked elite. Never found any content in it to play. Just seemed to be a case of spending an hour flying to meet up with friends, an hour trying to fly to the same asteroid belt then kill a few things. Then repeat. Trying to do anything else just resulted in flying in copy and paste sectors for hours then being killed by a much bigger ship with nothing you can do about it.

X4 may be a bit buggy at the moment but it will be fixed and improved over the years. With plenty added for free. That and it will have mods, some of which will hopefully be fully blown like with X3 (I'm working on getting custom ships in the game at the moment).

This in a nutshell, its big and also very very samey, they have introduced content but to actually do it they introduced grind due to the content being quite small in reality.

Mod tools would fix this game within 6 months. That being said its well worth a tenner as its fun for about 100hrs or so.

If you liked the original Elite, ED is pretty much that with modern graphics. There's some great exploration potential there but I found once I set myself a goal and achieved it, I was pretty much burnt out.

Original Elite I can just jump into and start playing pretty much - sure it is/can be hardcore but you kind of ease into it more in terms of controls and game mechanism - with ED I feel like I'm having to deal with all that straight away and I just find it off-putting every time I sit down to play - though for some that is the essence of Elite.
