Elysium blunder

Hello,

I recently acquired a Xigmatek Elysium case specifically for it's 420mm radiator support in the roof. After opening everything it seems I've wasted my time and effort.

The Thermochill which is 142 x 480 x 60mm will not fit. In fact I could barely get it inside the damned case. There is a plastic thing, probably part of the case mechanism, blocking the square section and the 5.25" bays are in the way of the end of the radiator.
This is ridiculous. This case is supposed to be huge and the thermochill isn't even the thickest, there are 80mm ones now.

What can I do now?

Your options seem quite limited, either return the Rad and find out which 140.3 radiators it does fit or get cutting lumps out of the case.

I can't return the rad as it's from 2009/10. I don't want to mod it as I'd rather have a different case if I'm doing that. Also it's not a simple mod as the plastic grill retention mechanism is in the way, the fan extenders won't fit and the vent holes don't even seem to line up very well anyway. You'd be better off starting from scratch.

I've looked at a video of an elysium with a 420mm in the top and the barbs are definitely a lot further from the drive bays so thats that.

I guess my best option is to send it back but it's really not fit for purpose rather than just a DSR. The description is false as it does not fit all 420mm radiators.

I wish I had got a Fractal Define XL and modified the roof as I had planned to do before.

Why don't you ask Xigmatek for a compatible radiator list? They can't possibly accomodate every rad. There is no official set standard for these things other than measurements. It's not like 'PCI-E' compatibility.

Can you get a picture of the area in question without the radiator there?

I tried to send a message to Xigmatek, no response so far.

The reviewer said the radiator should fit "comfortably". Someone else must be using the Thermochill PA140.3 surely?

The black plastic thing is in the way and possibly the metal structure of the 5.25 bays.

From looking at those pics it appears the radiator you are trying to use may be the old 25mm spacing? In which case even if it did sit in the case the hole spacing wouldn't line up anyhow. Just when you mentioned how long you had it then the brand of radiator made me think, look at the gap between the fans, with a standard 15mm spaced radiator the fans would be near touching.

The extra length of the radiator due to the hole spacing is giving you the issues.

Yes you're right. The fan spacing is incompatible. I can't decide what to do. My reservoir doesn't fit either so this build is a nightmare.

Do you think getting another case instead and mounting my radiator externally, as I had it before, would be a good idea? Or do I really need to replace the radiator as the spacing makes it useless?

In your situation I would keep the elysium, try sell the PA140.3 and get something like a Phobya G-Changer 420.

Why does the res not fit? I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say you are using a dual bay res? As I've heard some have issues fitting those into certain cases, usually due to a mounting lip between bays. Nothing cutting the lips off didn't solve.

Also have you tried to see if the rad will fit in the bottom of the case, having the PSU up top?

Thanks for the advice.

You're corrrect. The dual-bay reservoir doesn't have a groove for the mounting tabs in the bays.

I can't even get the rad inside the bottom of the case, let alone get it near the vent holes.

Why would you keep the Elysium? The only reason to get it in the first place was for water cooling support. Its massive size, weight and below average features such as airflow and soundproofing make it otherwise undesirable.

Keep it for the WC support, it has huge potential with the correct equipment. Not to mention its price compared to other 'WC ready' cases.

IF you want to change case, keep the rad AND have the rad internally, you should be looking at something like the TJ07, a case that doesn't rely on mounting points and can use internal stands.

I can't keep it after all as I noticed it's damaged. It's crumpled in one corner.

In addition, while putting it back into the box, the side panels were very awkward to slide back into position and weigh a tonne compared to the aluminium panels of my old eclipse.
