a mate has offered to give me free web hosting and email so i can get to grips with web designing. however as ive bought a domain and would like to this dedicated email im just wondering about any security and privacy issues with the fact that my 'mate' is hosting this all for me..... For a start will he be able to read any emails that i may send or receive?

Not that i wish to be difficult abt the situation as im grateful hes set the hosting up for me but its nice to know ;) hes a smarmy bugger and never know when hes lying or telling the truth!

also in the future should i decide to get my own hosting hows does this transfer over without leaving any traces?

Cheers

I would guess that would depend on how much control he has on the server - there is a chance he could see the email on the box, depends on the setup.

If you are that worried I would say fork out 15 or 20 quid a year for hosting from someone like TSOHost or Vidahost (lots of people use them both here), pennies a day and piece of mind (and probably more support than your mate can give you ;))

000webhost is another free option, options for the free account are a little lacking, but it's good enough to learn with :)

cheers guys. lots of good info here.

thanks for the link to the google apps one. ive currently added the MX records and am waiting for them to update so fingers crossed :)

ill leave the hosting to him as he says its fast and im familiar with uploading etc to his host via cuteftp, so it seems all is ok so far... designing and coding is the hardest part

will most likely return with more problems!

I know you are sorted, but another free cPanel host without adverts is V70.org.
Haven't used them for a long while, bit they used to be okay.

right

its been well over 48 hours now and the google apps says its still updating my MX records. ive sent an email from my domain email and it seems to work but its not recieving?!

any ideas?

TIA

says blacklist check

= Check IP or host for reputation

TTL 4 hours

RED for

SMTP - may be open relay

GREEN for

0 seconds - Good on Connection time
0.094 seconds - Good on Transaction time
OK - 67.222.148.195 resolves to host.fluxice.com
OK - Reverse DNS matches SMTP Banner

Says the IP address is on a BLACKLIST!!!??? (FIVETEN)

You should see something like this at the top. The other text about blacklisting is just general information I think.

0 is the lowest priority, so unless that server is down all emails will get sent there which explains why both Google are complaining and why you haven't received any emails.

The only servers you should see in that list are Google ones.
