My company is typically office based but we have taken on a new member of staff who is out of office most of the time.

If we need to send emails outside the office, we can use the provided website however, it would be useful if the staff member out and about could just use Outlook.

Would we need to look at an email hosting service for this?

I looked at one and it gave the option of transferring our domain which I don't want to do.

Any ideas? I looked into Office 365 exchange online but got very expensive and involved just for one email address.

can you just employ a gmail account say, and have the out of office employee use Outlook via an IMAP interface to the gmail account.
Maybe gmail is not secure enough; there was a thread a few months back discussing the alternative (nominal sum) hosting services, however I am not sure they
all supported IMAP.
An exchange server gives access to one anothers calenders too inside outlook, but it does not sound as though you have one even for the in-house employees.
